So then you know... Victoria is hardly "dangerous". Since I wanted to keep my city comparison on a same/ same basis I only shared my US/ Canadian travel.

Yes, I read Macleans article, and because of my travels found it a little disputable.

Its either Brentwood Bay or Saanichton NOW.  What it was when NParker's time as a kid likely over 20 years ago is a different matter

But you do realize that MacLean's crime statistics depict Victoria as such because the downtown core of any city is almost always going to attract more criminal activity, and given Victoria's very small physical footprint (smaller than Langford, Saanich, Highlands, Sooke, Central Saanich+Brentwood, North Saanich and nearly View Royal) but containing the busy and boisterous downtown core skews the data?

 

Now don't get me wrong, the policies of the City of Victoria's mayor have exacerbated an already problematic social disorder issue in the downtown core, but when it comes to crime, City of Victoria residents and tax payers are not responsible for 100% of the crime that occurs within the City of Victoria. The other 80% of the Capital Region's population helps out a little.

All those young thugs that come in from Brentwood Bay to party in the core....

"Crime" in the core is not club-goers.  Very few crimes (that are prosecuted, anyway, and show up in stats) are committed in and immediately outside clubs, really.  

 

Anyway, how about that casino in View Royal eh?

As for what I do - NOTHING since Central Saanich doesn't have a homeless problem, heck I have never seen one in all my time here.  No crime problem here either as I have already said I feel safe leaving my doors unlocked when I go out.  Its the City of Victoria that has these issues, not Central Saanich.  You were the one who said "yeah right" when it was said "With the way the city of Victoria is going downhill (see VHF list) people will go back to using their muni's name in their address"

 

Sounds like you are the one who sits back and does nothing other than votes and pays taxes.  You have the idiotic city council in power and is the laughing stock of Greater Victoria politics!

Woodwynn Farms is in Central Saanich, so it's great to see locals in that area trying to better the homelessness and drug addiction issues facing this region, despite the local government's attempt to shut the operation down.

 

"Woodwynn Farms attempts to educate, rehabilitate and integrate into society people who are homeless, criminally involved, mentally ill and addicted to drugs. It also aims to provide transitional and low-income housing."

Ouch!  Yet you pay the 4th-most of any of the 13 for your police force.  What are they doing all day?  Or does paying so much keep crime down?

I reiterate, there has been NO change, at least not during my tenure in the region. The postal address was "dictated" as Brentwood Bay, BC, at least as far back as 1978.

 

As for the rest of your argument, I will simply say, unless one is a farmer or works at Butchart Gardens, there is very little reason for Central Saanich to exist except as a bedroom community to Victoria. "Our" crime is "your" crime. And this is the last I will say on the matter except to add the following.

I know this is off topic but the crime thing really gets me. You can't have a crime list that has Victoria and Saanich compared separately against a whole bunch of other cities that are not that way. That list has saanich as one of the safest communities in Canada. That would be like hiving off just downtown Vancouver and then having the rest of Vancouver be listed separately. All that does is show how messed up our jurisdictional lines are.

Interesting that Woodwynn Farms is doing that, but good for them helping out under privileged people.  The question I want to know is what is the City of Victoria doing about its homeless population.  Disgusting homeless encampments seem to litter the downtown core and the City seems to be doing nothing about it.  I generally avoid the downtown area now unless I really have to, after all some of the best restaurants and shopping are found outside the downtown area now

 

Interesting that Central Saanich pays the 4th highest police cost,  Not sure what they do.  What does Oak Bay pay, I am sure they are well staffed for their policing problems.  Maybe the City needs to increase its policing budget?

As for your argument about Central Saanich that is your opinion.  Most people have moved out here to escape the crime problems of the City of Victoria, for the peace and quiet.  Heck the City of Victoria isn't even the most populous of the municipalities and hasn't been for a long time.  I think more new homes are being built in Langford than the rest of the municipalities combined.  People are moving out of the City.  I am happy to live here

 

But then again on your initial argument that the casino should not be called Victoria because it isn't in Victoria, yet you then argue that I live in Victoria when I am out in Brentwood Bay.  You can't have your cake and eat it too AND THATS MY POINT!!!!!

BUT NO!!!!! My point is that in every other city in Canada, the municipality of Saanich would be part of Victoria is any sane City. That greatly skews the stats. Try walking from Vancouver to Richmond or across the City of Halifax and then compare that to walking across tiny little City of Victoria. If we make the 800 and 900 blocks of Johnson and Pandora a City on its own than it would be the most dangerous in Canada, Victoria would likely drop to 20th on the list.

Victoria is one of Canada's most densely populated municipalities, and the most densely populated municipality on the Island, for sure. And let's remember it's one of the smallest physical municipalities in the region.

As for housing, you'd be surprised. There's actually more housing under construction within the City of Victoria than within Langford and the entire Westshore, and population-wise the Westshore put on less growth over the last five years than did the combined four core municipalities of Victoria, Saanich, Esq and Oak Bay.

But I hear ya, Central Saanich must be a great place to live. I'd love to live out there if it made sense for me to do so.

As for the question, yes I live in Victoria, BC, but don't use some poppycock that the casino isn't in Victoria and can't use the name.  We either all live in Victoria and share REGIONAL problems or we all live in our respective municipalities and don't care about our neighboring municipal problems.

 

I am not doubting the City is by far the most densely populated municipalities by far, no question about that.  All my previous posts were to illustrate the point in the previous paragraph

 

As for amalgamation I am open to the idea, but I would expect a decrease in my taxes as government should be more efficient (boy am I funny).  But seriously, am I wrong about the concept?

That's not quite right.

 

There are 725 condominium units under construction in downtown Victoria alone, plus another 356 purpose-built rental units. And that's just downtown Victoria, not the rest of the City of Victoria proper. For realtime stats see http://victoria.citified.ca/data/

 

Live data also does not include recently completed projects like the 106-unit Hudson Walk Two, the 65-unit Azzurro, etc.
