Oops, indeed it is. My still waking up brain saw 35,000.

although 3500 seems high - 1 in 100 does not really.  but since female straight sex workers outnumber males by a high margin it could be as high as 1 in 45 or 50 females.  and that seems high again. a lot of part-timers and casuals i guess.

Outreach workers say they are infuriated that Victoria police used “ambush tactics” on sex workers in an undercover effort to find evidence of human trafficking.

 

Last month, officers with the department’s special victims unit posed as a client and, through communication on escort-advertising websites, got the sex worker to meet at a hotel room.

 

When the sex worker arrived at the hotel room, a plainclothes officer and a social worker questioned the woman about whether she was being trafficked or sexually exploited. Officers spoke with eight women, the youngest of whom was 18.

 

Rachel Phillips, executive director of PEERS Victoria Resources Society, said sting operations which draw women to hotel rooms under false pretenses further stigmatize and marginalize sex work, which is often falsely equated with human trafficking.

“Sex work is treated as a vulnerability in and of itself, as something that’s wrong in these people’s lives,” she said. “Sex work is a response to being in vulnerable situations.”

 

Police did not say if the operation turned up evidence any of the women were being sexually exploited, but said the public should “be aware that human trafficking is present in Victoria.”

 

Some of the women were visiting from Montreal and Toronto, police said. “This is not uncommon, as many victims of sexual exploitation travel on a circuit of major cities throughout Canada.”

 

Phillips believes the police overstated the presence of human trafficking in Victoria.

 

In her six years with PEERS and working with hundreds of people in the sex industry, Phillips said, she has talked to five women who described being trafficked. “It’s not as commonplace as people think it is,” she said.

‘Project No More’ Reaches Out To Victims Of Human Trafficking

Victoria, BC – Detectives with VicPD’s Special Victims Unit worked to combat human trafficking in Victoria with “Project No More” in mid-June.
The goal of “Project No More” was to combat human trafficking by connecting with those who may be at-risk of being trafficked for sexual exploitation. The officers focused on meeting with potential victims to offer resources and assistance. The project also focused on gathering information related to human trafficking in Victoria.
“Project No More” took a victim-centered approach, with a primary focus on support for potential victims of exploitation and awareness about available resources. The project involved officers working in plainclothes out of a local hotel. The officers contacted sex-trade workers through a website advertising escort services, posing as a “John”, and set up meetings at the hotel. The officers were accompanied by a social worker for their meetings.
In total, the officers met with eight sex-trade workers. Some of the women were visiting Victoria from as far east as Montreal and Toronto. This is not uncommon, as many victims of sexual exploitation travel on a circuit of major cities throughout Canada. The youngest woman the officers spoke with was eighteen-years-old.
Upon arrival, the women were all immediately advised that they were free to leave and were under no obligation to speak with police. The majority of these women remained in the hotel room and spoke with the officers. The officers established contact with these women, provided information about support resources, and provided bags containing toiletries, clothes, and gift cards to obtain basic items.

Detectives with VicPD’s Special Victims Unit are asking the public to be aware that human trafficking is present in Victoria. I would surmise that most local "escort" sex workers are just UVIC students trying to pay their outrageous tuitions. Convince me I'm wrong.

Sounds to me like the women were treated very respectfully, given the option of answering questions and paid for their time. I would surmise that the experience was more favourable than 99.99% of their other "dates".

 

I can see why PEERS would object, any negative publicity related to sex trafficking would cut into their funding and impact their salaries. I would hope that in cases like this they could look beyond their own self-interest and consider that of the people they are supposed to be supporting. 

PEERS has no interested in decreasing sex work or even sex trafficking.  their mandate is simply to support those in the trade.

PEERS has annual revenue of about $750K. About $60K comes from donations while the bulk of the rest comes from Governments and other charities. $350K of the total goes to compensation.

it's just one in the long line of non-profits here.  supported by government.

PEERS was created as a non-judgemental support organization focused on the well-being of sex workers. There are plenty of other groups that provide moral lecturing.
