Tim Hortons in Victoria and the south Island

I was disappointed upon returning to Ontario this summer for the first time in 20 years to find TH has occupied ALL the turnoff's along the 401, complete with orange plastic seating, dirty floors and windows, and line ups out the door at every stop. (?!)

I miss the days of the truckstop cafe usually beside a highway motel - with waitresses, ceramic cups, glass glasses, yukon breakfasts with fried tomatoes, and hot (real) turkey sandwiches with fries and gravy.

The full fry up: bacon, sausage, eggs anyway you liked, pancakes and real maple syrup - served by a waitress inevitably named Marge while Hank, her cousin, filled up the car, checked the tires and oil, and scraped the bugs off the windows.

Before they invented menus that hang on the wall, teeny pats of butter pressed between waxpaper, snitty cashiers with ball caps, table syrup instead of maple syrup, crescents instead of croissants, microwaved bacon that was fried 6 hours before, bread dough that arrives frozen from a plant n Northern Alberta, catsup instead of ketchup, fries stuffed with MSG, and having to beg for an extra napkin.

Now you're going to make me cry....

Breaking News - Canwest, November 25th 2008

"A local man was held over for psychiatric review after completely destroying a Tim Horton's. The man, who cannot be named for reasons of safety after death threats were received (and made) by police over denial of early morning doughnuts, was quoted as saying - "It's all her fault; that nostalgic whimsy about 'real diners', and maple syrup and Timmys taking over the 401..something had to be done!" Believed to be in reference to an online discussion with a 'Ms Woods', the man apparently flipped over lack of decent, old style diners and took matters into his own hands. 'Ms Woods', a recent candidate for city council, could not be reached for comment but her spokesperson said she was driving Route 66 in search of the best fries and gravy.

A shaken resident who witnessed the explosion stated -"it was horrible, timbits flying everywhere. How am I going to get the jam and sprinkles off my window - anyone have a napkin?"

A spokesperson for Tim Horton's reassured regular customers: "Luckily we don't do anything fresh anymore; the truck will be here shortly to re-stock and our clients are used to having no place to sit."

One day I'll tell my girlfriend's story of visiting the Westshore TH's where the cook must have been annoyed at being called from his break to help with the huge lineup because he demonstrated his feelings by angrily slamming a massive fistful of bacon onto the sandwich he was making.

Update 1 - November 25th.

"The man taken to a regional hospital last night after blowing up a Tim Horton's was held over for further treatment following a 'significant relapse'. During a press conference hospital administrators and doctors explained -"The patient was allowed to go to the hospital snack bar under escort, but it turned out to be a Tim Horton's, which is what set him off in the first place. Before security and medical staff could restrain him, he was able to stuff 150 crullers into the microwaves and turn them on high. We admit to a serious lack of judgement." A damage estimate was not available as maintenance crews are still trying to get tomato soup out of the air conditioning.

The hospital is now considering offering the food concession contract to Bread Garden.

I was thinking more the marketing department of TH - work for change (destruction?) from within!

TH has opened a location in Mayfair Mall on the edges of the food court.

It still amazes me that Tim Horton's does as well as it does given the product they offer.

I also continue to be horrified at the idea of TimBits given how Tim Horton died. For those of you that do not know the story, he died by flipping his car at 100 miles an hour and smearing himself along a stretch of the QEW between St Catherine's and Hamilton - bits of Tim everywhere.

It still amazes me that Tim Horton's does as well as it does given the product they offer.

I've never been a fan myself either, so I tend to be the oddball amongst friends when I suggest an indy shop.
