Premier Christy Clark announced a $100-million venture-capital fund to give early-stage tech entrepreneurs access to money that will help grow their businesses. She said the money will address the difficulty entrepreneurs face when trying to bankroll their innovative but untested ideas.

“Tech tends not to be guaranteed bets,” Clark told a news conference Tuesday. “This seed fund is going to be proof that the British Columbia government has faith and confidence in our tech industry. It will allow us to attract a lot of investment from around the world that we hope would match it.”

The B.C. Tech Fund is the first part of a three-pronged strategy by government to enhance the technology sector’s role in the government’s broad economic plan.

The BC Tech Fund will help promising tech companies in B.C.’s tech sector by creating an avenue for capital funding, enabling them to take the next step towards joining the ranks of other job-creating tech companies.

The new fund will also help develop a sustainable venture capital system in the province, building on the success of the B.C. Renaissance Capital Fund (BCRCF), the province’s well developed Angel investment community, and responding to current funding needs.

Capital is one of three pillars in the forthcoming #BCTECH Strategy. This first pillar, announced today, also includes continuing to support B.C.'s competitive tax system and research environment.

The remaining two pillars, talent and markets, include actions to deepen the B.C. technology talent pool by developing and attracting the highest quality talent, and actions to make it easier to access new markets. The complete #BCTECH Strategy will be announced in January.

^ I guess that since oil and gas has tanked in BC the Liberals need a new angle to convince people that they are investing in the economy. I wonder how much of this money Ballard and some of the other BC tech dogs will get to promise to not layoff any more staff.

My sense is that this fund is really geared to new/venture and startup firms as opposed to the Ballard's of the world who really are yesterday's news from a performance standpoint. I would be surprised therefore if much if any of this money is earmarked for orgs like them. It will be interesting to see how the "sustainable venture capital system" plays out since that is a significant gap for local (BC) firms who historically have had to look to California and other non-BC or Canadian sources for venture funding.

Tech enthusiasts gathered at Fort Tectoria Friday morning to hear from a panel of entrepreneurs in Victoria's burgeoning tech industry, hosted by CBC British Columbia as part of its Inspiration Series.

CBC Radio One's On The Island host Gregor Craigie and All Points West host Robyn Burns asked three panelists about startups and Victoria's future as a leader in the tech world.

"With 900 tech companies, 22,000 employees and over $3 billion in total revenue, it's hard to deny: the old stereotypes are dead," said Craigie.

The panel discussion, called Victoria 2.0, covered topics ranging from gender imbalance in tech companies to the impact of a low Canadian dollar on local businesses.

"One of the great things about Victoria is it is a smaller community, you're able to really make those deep connections," said Nicole Smith, founder of Flytographer.

Best of all, the city is affordable, she said.

"And you're actually able to afford a house."

Or Vancouver. I'm expecting a lot of people from our Vancouver office to move to Victoria as they settle down just because you literally can't put down roots in Vancouver.

Also thought I'd share some news that just dropped about our company MetaLab, which has been headquartered out of Victoria for 9 years: http://www.fastcompa...sectors/design

It’s a common misconception that tourism is Victoria’s biggest economic engine. In fact, while tourism is important, it’s actually the high-tech industry that generates the capital region’s greatest economic impact.

At about $4 billion annually, the high-tech industry has roughly twice the impact of tourism.

That’s why last week’s courting of investors from across North America was hugely important, according to Mayor Lisa Helps.

It all started out as a sort of “reverse trade mission,” meant to attract investors from San Francisco in the wake of last year’s trade mission to that city. But last week’s visits by potential investors and conference planners from across North America exceeded all expectations.

Traffic webcam data is now available to the public, entrepreneurs and software developers through B.C.’s open government license, data that can now be used to create new tools and services that could make driving in B.C. safer and more convenient.

“By sharing our valuable highway information, we hope to see the creation of new ideas and new tools that will prove invaluable to highway travellers in our province,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone. “At the same time, we are supporting the innovation that is alive in our thriving B.C. tech economy and I look forward to seeing what the development community and others involved in transportation services can do with this data.”

The newly-released highway camera data includes links to the real time images that are publicly posted on DriveBC, along with the site name, view orientation and GPS location for each camera. Currently, there are more than 320 cameras providing images that are used for travel information by motorists, commercial drivers, tourists, and many organizations including emergency responders.

Government is seeking input from industry to explore the innovation opportunities that access to this data presents. As part of the #BCTECH Strategy, the BC Developers’ Exchange will be hosting events with software developers and entrepreneurs to understand the potential for B.C.’s tech workers and businesses.

Another soft article here but it’s not surprising if you know who owns Capital. It will take a national media organization or an off island publisher to run a real story here and let me tell you all there is much more to this story that the TC has not even begun to connect the dots because it’s not in their interest to dig too far down.

*coughahem* hmmmm....most professional 'boards' have bylaws, the type of bylaws that would not permit anyone to sit on the board with that kind of 'record' if you will.  Either that is rectified or there very well will be some 'digging' - VIATEC is funded by many layers of government.  BC's track record with past corruption etc., well lets say this best be cleaned up quick (the board issue).

What does Dan Gunn have to say about all of this?

The local news coverage here feels a little light. This is a big, black mark on the local tech industry considering Leach is the chair of VIATEC.
