They would have to be members of either IATSE #891, IATSE #669, or ACFC 2020 in order to work on any of the larger films in B.C.

Membership in those three unions is held by B.C. residents.

Here on Vancouver Island could be where the 60% local crew data comes from.

In the past few years, Vancouver Island, and Victoria specifically has developed enough homegrown talent to support approximately 3 large scale shoots at the same time and all largely staffed with CRD locals.

Still, many of the Department Heads come from Vancouver (making up the other 40%).

So really, all crew but the senior artistic team (DP, Director, Art Director, etc) on any given film production in B.C., also live in B.C.

It gets quite complicated, but generally all filmmaking in B.C. signs either this contract - https://bccfu.com ... or the ACFC contract on this page - https://cmpa.ca/labo...ments-and-fees/

Those two contracts between various B.C. filmmaking unions and big international production companies describe 98%+ of the filmmaking that takes place in B.C. ... and largely explains why (at the crew positions) ... only B.C. residents work on large B.C. film productions.

Camosun College wants to change the film sector for the better on Southern Vancouver Island and are making headway in their construction of the educational film studio at the college.

The provincial government provided Camosun College with a $150,000 grant to put together a business case that is now almost complete. Their next steps are to put their feelers out there to those who may be interested in building the studio.

“In a sense, we’re creating a partnership opportunity for Camosun to build the studio, a report that will likely be put out in November and an expression of interest will be coming sometime shortly thereafter,” said Geoff Wilmshurst, vice-president of partnerships at the college.

Hallmark’s trademark American Christmas movies? They’re made in Canada

https://www.theglobe...made-in-canada/

To those outside the fandom, Hallmark is best known as an American greeting card company owned by Crown Media, which in the early 2000s leveraged its brand into TV movie production that would in time come to stand for a genre (never not Christmas), a star system (Lacey Chabert; Danica McKellar) and a low-budget industry (most Hallmark movies are priced in the range of US$2-million). With an annual audience of more than 85 million in the U.S. and 14 million in Canada, Crown, via Hallmark, has built a TV empire, inspiring multiple companies to devise their own holiday fare using variations of the model (Lifetime, Netflix and the Great American Country channel recently bought by Crown’s former CEO Bill Abbott are just a few). Despite some delays and adjustments due to COVID, Hallmark has hardly slowed their schedule in the past few years, and viewership only continues to expand.

It stuns me there is such a market for these formulaic, shlocky movies, but to each their own I guess. They keep the Canadian motion picture industry busy, so that's a good thing.

I think maybe as daytime soap operas have died off, there is room for this.   It is the same kind of idea really, same market.  But now you can watch on demand rather than trying to keep up with a soap.

Pretty harmless too.

We could revert back to more Jerry Springer or Maury on TV.

I'm now told Maury is still on.

...Pretty harmless too....

Agreed. I imagine there's not much chance of lowering the IQ of the average Hallmark movie viewer any lower than it already is.

There is actually a good new series on Brit Box called Casualty 1900s, London hospital, (this is historical and not to be confused with one of a similar name that is just called  casualty,)

^ he’s 80, still in the show after 41 years. And the show is still going, not bad.

Only 4 left:

The Bold and the Beautiful (CBS), Days of Our Lives (NBC), General Hospital (ABC), and The Young and the Restless (CBS).

Down from 12 in the 90’s and 19 in the 70’s. No new one created since 1999.

New Netflix release Rescued by Rudy was filmed in Victoria.

It's about a state trooper who meets a dog at a shelter, and it's based on a true story: https://www.netflix..../title/81107362

Rat Patrol!

Never missed an episode if the antenna could pick it up that night (pre-Cablevision, so Seattle stations were always a bit of a crap-shoot).

Camosun film studio in Saanich moves along as community concerns heard

Traffic, neighbourhood disruption and environmental impact discussed

“We’re getting close to offering the (RFP). Our board has approved the next stage, which ensures that we’re doing our due diligence,” Wilmshurst said.

The film studio is seen as an opportunity for local learners to train for highly paid jobs and begin careers in the film sector, he added.

Employment opportunities will come as part of the development of a new and sustainable industry on southern Vancouver Island, Haynes said. “The region sees this as an opportunity not just for Saanich, but for the region at large.”

Development is expected to begin within the next 18 months.

Southern Vancouver Island could have its first sound stages for film productions by the end of the year.

Strand, the company behind redevelopment of the former Western Speedway land in Langford, plans two 20,000-square-foot sound stages, and council is expected to say “action” on a building permit following a public hearing on May 6. “Langford really wants this … there won’t be any roadblocks; it will be a red-carpet roll-out,” Langford Mayor Stew Young said in an interview.

Young said the Langford studios will bring increased spending for local businesses and more jobs. “We have a young demographic and skilled tradespeople that the film industry can tap into,” he said. “This isn’t only great for Langford, but the whole region.”
