They're both casual shots so it's OK. If one were their formal portrait then that would be unbalanced. Or if one showed them in a real goofy pose (I remember an old one of Alan Lowe  in an army helmet) that would be bad, too. I don't think it's a particularly unflattering view of the Saanich mayor. That picture of Atwell you prefer, isn't that his election portrait? I think it's at least four years old. News flash: we all look four years older.

So La Presse is going to go non-profit, and they are hoping for some government hand-outs.

La Presse's move to non-profit model signals 'historic' evolution for Canada's newspapers Canada is still far behind U.S. and Germany in news media innovation

At Pride yesterday, those marching with the TC float were wearing delivery sacks and trying to hand out yesterday's paper to spectators. It was the only free swag I saw people declining during the parade. No one wants to carry around a newspaper in the heat all day!

Oh boy.

The New York Times shot itself in the foot today by standing behind a recent hire to its editorial board who posted extremely inappropriate content in regards to “white people.”

Here are some examples of new hire Sarah Jeong’s idea of humour ...or something.

“Are white people genetically predisposed to burn faster in the sun, thus logically being only fit to live underground like groveling goblins [sic]”

“#CancelWhitePeople”

“Dumbass ******* white people marking up the internet with their opinions like dogs pissing on fire hydrants”

And on, and on, it goes.

The NYT says they “vetted” Jeong and found no issues with her posts. She claims they were in response to online bullies. Interesting tactic, if that’s really the case.

Anyways, earlier this year the NYT fired a new hire the same day she started working for the paper after it was discovered she had tweeted racist comments.

The NYT is now feeling heat from subscribers who are shocked and saddened that the paper would even consider hiring a reporter who penned such a collection of racist missives, let alone support her in the face of criticism from, well from anyone who doesn’t consider vulgarity and vitriol enlightening.

What they’ve done plays directly into the hands of Trump and his attacks on the media by signaling to the entire world that indiscriminate racism directed at white people is A-OK.

Eh, she was just trolling some trolls. Maybe not the wisest thing for an ambitious journalist looking to work at the world's most prestigious newspaper; the safest way to deal with trolls is to ignore them, Jackie Robinson-style.

But this is good to know. I am adding it to Volume III in my series on culture, this one titled "How Asian Women Should Respond To Abuse: Advice from White Men".

How would she know that the trolls were middle aged white men or white people at all for that matter? It is not like trolls provide photos of themselves.

Her argument doesn't stand up. My bet is that she will be gone by the end of the day.

Interesting to know you don't have a problem with racism.  Hope you are consistent in that

Saying she was just responding to bullies is a total cop out as many of her tweets were not replying to anyone.  She had one where she was saying the only things white people can do without commiting cultural appropriation is golf and skiing.

Funny considering she is a non white person using electricity invented by white people, on a computer invented by white people, on the internet invented by white people, on a social media platform invented by white people, using English which is a white language, and engaging in a profession/culture/zeitgeist created by white people in a nation founded by white people.

I certainly hope she never wears any traditional western clothing such as trousers or blouses or high heels

I’m surprised she hasn’t taken from Joy Reid’s playbook and claimed “hackers” hacked her account.

haha now that has to say something, people won't even take your product when its FREE!  I might pick it up if I'm in waiting room and its rare I find an article worth reading.

The only paper I will buy is the Sunday New York Times, now that takes me at least a week to read and even then its rare I'm done.  Now that is a good paper, but its also not cheap either

Since the specific Times Colonist threads all seem to be locked, I guess I'll post this here...

Does anyone think the T-C might want to invest in a more current aerial shot of downtown?

If I am not mistaken this one shows The Falls still under construction!

Has anyone been following the TC's five-part series on having and recovering from a heart attack?  It is unbelievably cringe-worthy.  It's like the Editorial staff openly asked, "I'll bet that Jack Knox is the most inappropriate columnist to write a five-part series about having a heart attack!' to which David Sovka rose out of his chair and exclaimed, "Hold my beer..." and then keeled over.

In a word, the series is terrible.  What a missed opportunity in what could have been a very informative and introspective look at what one's cardiovascular journey.  No, instead we get is a barrage of warmed over Jack Knoxian sidebars, cutaways and sophomoric comments from someone who appears to be more than pleased with his own self and writing.  It completely take away from the subject matter.  Here's a taste:

This is a series about what it is like to suffer a heart attack, and what it is like to recover. Warning: Do not have a heart attack! There, I thought I would just get to the point, for anybody who has other things to do.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA.

And it just goes on like that.  I'm not saying write it as soberly as a judge.  But if you're the main protagonist in this series, me wanting you to suffer another heart attack so that we're not subjected to the rest of series is probably not the vibe you're going for.  Look, I nearly keeled over from heart failure due to an undiagnosed congenital heart defect a few years.  Of all people, I should empathize with your plight.  I should be rooting for you to survive, learn and grow - not actively cheer for your demise.  This isn't Thursday ****ing night at Yuk Yuks.

I must say I am not nor have I ever been a JK fan; if I want to read truly witty but intelligent yet gut-splittingly funny material I will always defer to the great Pulitzer-prize winning humorist Dave Barry of the Miami Herald. Jack Knox isn't qualified to shine Barry's shoes and I have to agree he is not the guy to pen a series on heart attacks, for a variety of reasons.

First and foremost, and above all, it isn't a funny subject. Nor IMO should it be approached as such. There is probably no one on VV who isn't related to or doesn't know someone who has had heart issues; my own dad passed away from a heart attack.

Barry in fact wrote a brilliant article on colorectal cancer a few years ago called a "Journey into My Colon" that won several awards, because while funny as hell it also managed to weave into the fabric of the article a humanistic angle (his own younger brother at the time was diagnosed with colon cancer), critical medical information, not to mention a very serious message, i.e. guys over 50 need to get into their doctor's office and undergo a colonoscopy which, while perhaps an uncomfortable thought for many, might just save a life:

https://www.miamiher...cle1928847.html

As you note Knox has an annoying tendency, in this series, and in his writing generally, to somehow come across as overly pleased with his own (perceived) witticisms....
