I love how a majority voted to keep that stretch of road open, and council did the exact opposite. We would often have a drive along there on our way home from Witty's. Guess we won't be doing that now. It made a nice change of scenery.

45% voted to keep the road closed, not allowing any cars down there, while 55% voted to revert it back to an open road. Since the vote was so close, council decided to come up with a compromise, allow cars down to the lagoon ensuring access but also closing it in the middle to prevent people from just driving through while still keeping it somewhat pedestrian friendly. I think it's a pretty fair compromise.

Council voted to keep the road closed until the end of September as they felt the engagement done was not comprehensive. There was concern that the businesses and First Nations were not directly consulted, and that the survey results disproportionately represented residents outside of Colwood. There were 3,800 of which 1,751 were Colwood residents.  It should be noted that the motion did not pass unopposed.

Translation: the survey didn't achieve the results Council hoped for, so it needs to be adjusted/amended until such time as it does.

What a bunch of self-entitled outsiders, thinking they have some natural right to enjoy Colwood's ocean.

It may be Colwood’s ocean but it’s Esquimalt’s lagoon, and don’t you forget it.

Not for long. I'm starting a "Humans of Esquimalt Lagoon" campaign and we're going to relocate it.

Which specific councilors voted to keep it closed? I think it'd be good to keep that list handy for the next election.

The motion was to keep it closed until the end of September. It passed with Jantzen, Kobayashi, and Mayor Martin opposed.

this must have been terrifying for everyone.  good on the girl to stay put on the floating pizza.

After half an hour at a steady pace, he and others in the water still hadn’t reached the girl. A strong current was pulling her toward the open ocean, and she was heading “dangerously close” to the path the ferries travel to Departure Bay, Lawrence said.

He watched another man swim past faster than he’d ever seen someone move in the water, “like an Olympic swimmer,” and nearly reach the girl before turning back toward shore.

“He gets to the people who were ahead of me and I can hear him say: ‘I can’t do it. I’m going to drown,’ ” Lawrence said.

That seemed to frighten others in the water, who turned around with him, leaving Lawrence chasing after the girl.

“I just started going harder. You can hear her screaming and screaming,” he said.

Shortly after, Lawrence saw a kayaker make contact with the girl. When he knew she was safe with the paddler, Lawrence turned back to make the long swim back to shore.

Can't wait to hear Mike K.'s explanation for that.

A decision on whether to permanently close Ocean Boulevard to through traffic is dividing the community.

Colwood Mayor Rob Martin said he’s received more correspondence on that topic than any other during his time as mayor.

“Council received a pretty even split on closing the road, parts of the road or leaving it open,” Martin noted.

Somebody was learning how to ride a lift foil (or equivalent) surfboard in McNeill Bay. Do we already have a lift foils thread? I couldn't find one.
