Anyone else getting really tired of the Virgin Radio ad they paid to have in almost every TV commercial period. Kind of used to like it now I despise it. Good work virgin.

Thanks to a tip from a friend at Puget Sound Radio I see Salt Spring Island may be on the verge of getting approval for its own community radio station courtesy of our overlords at the CRTC, which has determined the island can sustain a locally run radio outlet at this time. Apparently the commission has in fact received such an application from a local entity called the Gulf Islands Community Radio Society (GICRS):

That’s super cool for them. Great find, ASE.

There was one running when I moved here. A fellow named Gary Brooks ran it, heck of a nice guy. Sold it and split to Panama or something. New guy wasn’t following the rules and got shut down, from what I hear.

Long time Victorians - of a certain age naturally - who listened to Vancouver radio jocks in the 60's and 70's will probably remember Roy "the Real" Hennessey who passed away yesterday at age 80. Along with Hennessy when I was in my teens in the early 70's I listened like many south island teens to CFUN and CKLG, where Hennessy was a really Big Deal, along with Doc Harris (also CKLG) and my good pal Tom Jeffries (ex-CFUN, ex- CKNW among many other stations).

Tom is in process of becoming a published author detailing the heyday of AM radio in SW BC which should be out in the fall. Looking forward to that one. As he himself has said radio in particular has changed beyond all recognition since the advent of the WWW and streaming and online services, and very likely has seen its best days in the rear view mirror, so his account should have some great material in it for those of us in the over-55 crowd especially.

I bought a house from Rick Honey, who was a longtime CKNW personality.

/\ RH died very young in 2001, a big shock in the BC radio community at the time. I think Rick was only 52-3. Dad was at the service along with a boat load of ex-jocks, mostly the Vancouver crew. Good guy...!

Well this was inevitable I guess - and theoretically could apply to many, many other traditional occupations typically historically performed by humans.

My Vancouver radio pals posted this on FB recently. I know the majority of them are shaking their heads and very grateful they are either retired or headed far down that path. My dad wouldn't know what to make of this and I'm sure would be as gobsmacked as the current generation of those older DJ's who are still working:

One is compelled of course to wonder what other occupations AI will supplant even in our own lifetimes. Personally I'm also glad my own remaining work 'runway' gets shorter and shorter by the day....

Red Robinson passed away today at 8:15 after a brief illness.

Heck, even I know who this guy was. RIP.

Very sad, the man was an icon on the west coast and really across Canada in the radio-sphere, truly the first rock n' roll DJ in these parts. Through my dad who was a contemporary of Red's from the late 50's to the late 70's, I had the good fortune to meet Red a couple of times; he was always beyond nice to me, always interested in what you were doing and literally a walking encyclopedia of Canadian radio and music knowledge and history. RIP sir.

Newsmax led the top cable news competition — including Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN — in ratings growth for the second quarter of 2023 compared to the same quarter of 2022.

According to Nielsen, during Q2 2023 Newsmax 's growth was explosive.

Do they give their viewership numbers? If you only had 10 viewers to start with, 100% increase is not a lot.
