Moss Street Paint-In

Good gravy, we're talking about a quiet residential street! Irritated drivers?

We can temporarily close streets like Oak Bay Avenue, Government Street, West Broadway, Commercial Drive...but Moss Street presents some sort of special logistical challenge?

No kidding. The longest block on Moss is the southern-most, maybe 20 homes long.

The problem with Beacon Hill Park, of course, would be that vendors couldn't sell refreshments and the participating artists couldn't sell their work, which would be a huge disincentive for them. We'd also have to listen to the so-called Friends pitch a fit about people actually using the park, as they did during the last Terry Fox Run. The disadvantage to the AGGV if the event is moved to a street-less setting is that it does want to get people inside the gallery, even if they don't stay for the after-hours events.

It's time the City just went ahead and did something commercial in the park. See if the "friends" have the money or stamina to launch a lawsuit against the wishes of the majority of Victorians.

If it accomplished nothing other than to cause the Friends to expire collectively in a fit of apoplexy, it would be a job well done.

This sucker goes again next Saturday. I REALLY think this event ought to be somewhere else, it seems like a "waste" to me to have 35,000 people on Moss St. buying lemonade from front lawn stands when they could be up and down a closed Government St. I know it ends with a beer garden/dance at the Art Gallery, I'm sure whatever they make from that each year could be matched by a grant from the DVBA instead. Or have the dance on Government St.

Wharf to Pandora. The thing could start/terminate in Centennial Square, Yates and Pandora could still be open to through traffic. Or maybe we use Broad, and the thing goes right through the Bay Centre. I've often thought it too bad the Bay Centre doesn't have big multi-panel sliding doors to open the mall to Broad St. But it seems that mall never does exciting events. Its Douglas St. entrance is nothing super inviting, you might even miss the whole thing if you are a tourist.

The mall is missed along Douglas because the faux heritage architecture makes it unassuming. You look at major downtown malls in other cities and they are designed to stand out.

Because Moss St. has a nice ambience? Because it isn't downtown? Ever think that maybe it wasn't held on Gov't for a good reason?

No. I'm sure it's held on Moss St. because that is where the art gallery is.

People would go bananas if it was held in Beacon Hill Park. But frankly, I think it'd be awesome at Fort Rodd Hill. Then they could charge $5, get 1/10 of the crowd, and make 10x the money. There is no better example of the el cheapo factor than the Moss St. Paint-In.

Plenty of residents who front onto Moss and adjacent streets were pissed beyond their boiling points last year. One elderly lady in particular, who we watched for a few minutes, cussed out anyone trying to park near the frontage of her home on an adjacent street. Nice.

I've been invited to be a part of the Paint In for about four or five years now. I enjoy it, even the big crowds.

It's well spaced out, meaning if they were to move it to Government St. it would stretch nearly to Douglas and Hillside unless the artists were crammed in closer together. It would be a different type of event with a different feel. It's nice to set up your table on a green boulevard under a shady tree. I would support a smaller Government St. art show but in addition to the Paint In, maybe in the Spring.

I was really quite amazed at the hospitality shown to me by the homeowners. I mean, they never have any say about losing their street for the day yet they often go out of their way to make sure I have everything I could need, like water or bathroom access.

Don't forget today is the Moss St. Paint In.
