Just think this again but in my skeptical tone and .... at the end.

I would hate that. I want CSV to continue to be CSV, only more so. Just like I want Oak Bay Avenue to continue to be Oak Bay Avenue, only more so. Same thing for Beacon Ave., same thing for West 41st Ave., same thing for West Broadway.

Long story short, when Victoria just relaxes and allows itself to be what it is and when it works on emphasizing and enhancing its own uniqueness and special features then everything tends to work out wonderfully. On the other hand, when Victoria gets uptight and feels self-conscious and tries to undo itself or make arbitrary changes in order to be more like or unlike some other place then things tend to go bad.

You have just nailed that bit of philosophy, but it is a crying shame that some of the posts that appear on VV don't work out so wonderfully as well. I need to learn to relax a bit more....

More so and also better. Restored, cleaned up, spiffed up.

Fernwood always makes for an informative example. If you were to propose a new Fernwood-style building on Fernwood or Gladstone right next to the old Fernwood-style buildings then you just know many people would get up in arms about it. You'll ruin Fernwood by doing that! These would be the same people who think the absurdly out-of-place stuff on the left side of this pic somehow fits perfectly.

But I would love a new Fernwood-style building. Extension and elaboration of the unique Fernwood atmosphere would be awesome. More Fernwood, better Fernwood.

(I had always hoped that the tennis courts beside the Belfry would eventually be built upon. Not only did it not happen, but they also cut down all of the beautiful old trees lining the entrance to Vic High. In effect, aggressive de-Fernwoodization. Sigh.)

I feel like I'm saying "long story short" a lot these days.

Interesting article and relevant to the bike lanes about to go into Cook St Village.

https://www.saanichn...ome-seeing-red/

Coun. Chris Coleman, whose ward contains several residential parking only areas, expressed his concern regarding the system.

“To begin with, I’m uncomfortable with a system that essentially has some residents pitted against other citizens,” he said. “And it can impact businesses. We know, for example, that 88 per cent of the businesses on Cook Street are accessed by customers in their cars. But with a lot of the streets in the area marked as residential parking only, it can become a problem for people wanting to use those businesses, particularly if they have mobility issues. Asking someone with a walker to park 300 metres away is like asking them to run a marathon.”

The lady who got the parking ticket, I have appts. near that corner and luckily the building has its own parking, or I would be in the same boat. I didn't realize that residents could petition for residential parking only. We have that on our street but no one ever asked us, lol. There are so many apartments around here, we figure all the cars by our house are residents anyways.

I was responsible for bringing an RPO zone to my street. The two big reasons for it were the next street closer to Cook Street Village went RPO, pushing people on to our street and the explosion in popularity of the Cook Street Playground, after it was remodeled a few years back. I went to the open houses and raised concerns how parking along Cook Street wasn’t being made 2hr parking to help with turnover. The mandarins politely nodded and smiled as I spoke. Residents were angry and talked a lot, but I’m the one who got off his duff and ran the petition. Oh, the political capital and goodwill I enjoy on this street as a result. I could open up an AirBnB brothel and I doubt anyone would say, “Boo!”

A big reason for the push onto residential streets is the fact that until last year, the entire stretch of the west side of Cook Street was totally unregulated. Now a stretch from May Street to Leonard Street is 2hr only. The other bits, including from Leonard Street south to Dallas Road? Unregulated. Why? Well, it’s oretty bloody coincidental that the unregulated, park all day zone starts right around the Parks HQ. On-site parking is minimal, so every day, right around when I take my dogs for their morning constitutional, Parks employees start filling up the parking spaces and don’t leave until the end of the day. Many playground users are displaced from spaces that by rights belong to them because City bureaucrats don’t want to piss off Parks staff. Perhaps if Mayor Helps stopped enabling its own employees to drive single occupancy vehicles to work, her chiding us for same may have some legitimacy.

For sure. Mike K. just likes to pull characters out of the rotation every now and then so that they don't go stale too quickly. The writers can use the breaks to develop fresh material.

He's just lost in the broken search function. If Mike can finally fix that...
