It is good to see 52 million dollars being spent on something that will benefit students, and be a hub for the community for the next 100 years. The new facility could include a 450 seat performing arts centre. The school is due to open in 2012.

So is this a go? We're talking about the building(s) on the west side of the school property, yes? Beside the rec centre?

Last I heard, the province won't fund the theatre: the community will need to find the $$

...that's probably about it. Only poor Oak Bay people go to OBSS. The wealthy and talented go to SMUS or G.N. :)

The story is in the November 4th. issue of the Oak Bay News. The new school will be constructed closer to Cadboro Bay Road between the two existing buildings. the two soccer/rugby fields will end up behind the new school.

This has been going around for over 5 years now and nothing has been done other than schematic drawings. I have not heard any confirmation that they started working drawings yet. I would guess we are a year away from breaking ground.

Architect John Graham, who once attended Oak Bay High, made a Powerpoint presentation to eight panelists and 30 others last Tuesday. The new Oak Bay High tentative plan is for a fine arts theatre, two new gyms, two sports fields, space for 1300 students and some community services. The estimated $52 million project is slated to begin construction in 2011.

The timeframe is crazily tight for this project. They basically need to start construction by later this year in order to meet the provincial deadlines for funding, which means there isn't much time for design work of a project of this scale. It should be interesting to see what happens in the next few months.

On the Street: Oak Bay school builders picked
Times Colonist
July 1, 2013

Victoria’s Farmer Construction and design partner Hughes Condon Marler Architects, with offices in Victoria and Vancouver, have been chosen as the preferred proponent to build the new Oak Bay High School. School District 61 is in negotiations with that team, hoping to complete a fixed-price agreement within the next few weeks. The school will replace the existing facility.
