You can practically see North Saanich from the extremely busy Fulford ferry terminal but still no cell service.

I find it shocking that there is opposition to cell phone towers in 2017. Then again, these are probably the same people who don't vaccinate their kids.

Even more shocking is the willingness to pay ripoff prices for spotty coverage.

Will Freedom Mobile really keep rates low?  Or will they jack them up in the name of network upgrades when the towers become too saturated?

That's an easy question to answer. They'll raise them. Owned by Shaw, right? Since when does Shaw compete as a low cost carrier? They aren't Lightspeed or Teksavvy.

No, they wont be raising, and Shaw has publicly stated this. Freedom is a discount carrier, just like how Fido is to Rogers and koodo is to Telus

I imagine Freedom will stay discounted as long as it operates with distinct "Home" zones. It's great if you stay in Vancouver, but as soon as you cross south of the Fraser you're roaming, or out of service if you go as far as Tsawwassen. Expansion of the network will likely lead to increases in fees.

One thing that people don't realize on freedom is if you get there highest plan (Currently 8gb normally 6gb of data) you get 1gb of data for outside of Freedom network, which includes the states. In Canada there partner network outside of Freedoms network is Rogers, so it works pretty good.

Yeah? That's actually pretty good. If we get good coverage in Victoria, I'll see about switching.

Note - we aren't listed on their map as getting it this year...

Only place in Victoria that has a chance of getting it this year is Uptown for the Freedom call center, then again the major Shaw purchase of spectrum in May, will speed up the overall process.

FWIW, Freedom has a bunch of new electrical permit applications for wireless antennae on various existing towers and buildings in Victoria. I've processed a few of their applications here in Richmond, they're going at expansion quite aggressively it seems.

Hold off on that new mobile phone purchase just a bit longer - Freedom Mobile (from Shaw), now building their Victoria-area network, will sell you the new iPhone X for $0 next year

So when I had to hook up to Teksavvy in my new house, do you know who came to install all the services and wires from the road to my communications panel in my house?  SHAW!  Yup, I'm getting Shaw internet service for half the price!

I'm only paying $60 a month for the next two years with Shaw. I even got my overall billed lowered and more channels.

Shaw owns the infrastructure to your house, but your traffic is being routed differently than a Shaw customer. Just like back in the day when you could get a different long distance provider using your Telus/BC Tel landline connection.

I am thinking about switching to Freedom mobile, does anyone have experience with them for quality, dead spots, etc

They don't have their own towers active here yet... still waiting. You can go to them, but you'll effectively be roaming.

I checked into it and you can't sign up if you live in Victoria even if they have coverage on their away network.  This is what they told me in their email:

If you do not live within our HOME network (the orange areas on the map) you will be unable to sign up right now, I apologize. If more than 50% of your usage is on the AWAY network for three or more months in a row, your account will be closed, as per our Fair Usage Policy – if you spend most of your time in the AWAY network, we unfortunately have to recommend you choose another provider.

Lucky has a $20 unlimited local plan.  No data or long distance.

Or...
