Those that grew up around the Pacific Northwest in the 80s knew KIRO news and the team of Gary Justice, Wayne Cody and Wappler.

Long-Time KIRO 7 Meteorologist Harry Wappler Dies

Known for his wit and ability to ad-lib on live television, Harry said his favorite moments were the ones when he made people laugh."I think any time you can get a run as long as I’ve had, you can’t have any regrets about it," he told an interviewer when he was awarded a National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle award in 1996.

HARRY WAPPLER TRIBUTE

KIRO 7 will air a special tribute to Harry Wappler on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

During a one-hour "Farewell, Harry!" special, television newscasters and personalities who worked with Harry through the years offered their tributes. They included Dan Rather, Andy Wappler, Aaron Brown, Wayne Cody, Gary Justice, Sandy Hill, J.P. Patches and many more famous faces.

"Beaver, ahoy!""The bridge is like a magnet, attracting both pedestrians and over 30,000 vehicles daily who enjoy the views of Victoria's harbour. The skyline may change, but "Big Blue" as some call it, will always be there."

I believe the full name was the "Wappler Double Doppler Radar."

Had the opportunity to meet Harry on a couple of occasions when some of the "old time" media types would periodically get together for reunion or other social occasions; a real down to earth gentleman. A nice man and a nicer human being. Too bad.

ASE, perhaps you can help confirm if there is any truth to this rumour:

Back in the old News Hour days of the old BCTV, apparently Tony Parsons and Norm "Happy 102nd Birthday to Norma Slipkettle up in Atlin" Grohman in person were quite the opposite of their on air personalities.

Tony, who is generally very serious reading the news, was a bit of a character in real life (I can see that, now). Norm, on the other hand, who was always fawning over birthdays of little ol' grannies in the farflung hinterlands in BC was a bit of a jerk in person.

I can confirm that for you, he was more than a bit of a jerk.

LJ pretty much covered it; I was never a fan particularly of NG. I'd categorize him as someone suffering from Little Man Syndrome. Due to my dad being in the media I met most of the CHEK-BCTV folks at one time or another when I was young. Tony OTOH was and is a good guy.

Another on air sports biz guy I really liked back in the day was John McKeachie. Although he spent much time drooling over Pamela Martin I really liked Big John. Very down to earth guy who did lots of community work. Ditto for Huddie Mack who lives close to my parents by UVic. One thing I always appreciated about Hudson was the fact he always had time for the old guys -I know my dad really liked that too. He was never condescending toward them especially when they would engage in the "well, back in MY day" stories. lol.

Another guy I'd put on the "not so nice" list was Robin Adair. Now there's someone who thinks he's a Big Wheel, even today. Not.

Yep, its actually Andy Stephen, and he is still around, although unfortunately has been in failing health in recent years. Frank Bond, who was the original station manager at CHEK when it was on Epsom Drive, just passed away recently. I believe he was 92 or 93.

PSR is a great site; and Sparky also reminded me of another one primarily dedicated to the local music scene from the 60's on:
http://rcmpsite.com/. Somewhere on there is a note about dad being inducted in the West Coast HOF for his radio/dj work.

Some pretty cool memories for those old enough to remember these bands from that era....

My dad knew John for a long time--apparently he was a Vic High grad, too. Decades later dad gave him a scoop when Gretzky's private jet secretly landed at YVR--this was at the time when Gretzky was rumoured to be moving to the Canucks.

I'm a little late, but here are some great vintage Christmas ads for local TV:

Good post Rob; PSR is a great site which I've browsed probably since its inception. I believe ex-Victoria media guy Mike Easton owns/runs the site.

Some great old ads there indeed - remember when CBC did in fact post each team's lineup for their weekly HNIC broadcasts? I'd forgotten all about that and some of the other ad information. Kilpatrick looks like he's about 22 in that one ad.

And McKeachie did in fact attend VicHigh as did his sister. He never let my dad forget about the fact that when an unknown American-born reporter named Pam Martin showed up for the job interview at the original Victoria Cablevision office, dad actually did_not hire her. I often wondered and asked him if he was blind too.... :D
