Abel said two or three boats had dropped out by Saturday afternoon.

that appears in a 12:15pm tc article today.  it's disingenuous.  more than 50% of the boats have quit now.

Sixteen Swiftsure skippers persevered through light wind, harsh rain, rough waters and challenging currents over the weekend to cross the finish line.

One hundred and six boats in the 76th edition of the Swiftsure International Yacht Race long courses dropped out.

there is uncertainty of course with the border.  and most (?) of the racing ships come from the usa.

but the event is in late may.  that's really too bad.  hopefully two years of cancellations does not impair its momentum.

Lack of plenty in 2020 gives way to no fun in '21.

Where did you see-hear-read this?  There's nothing mentioned on the Swiftsure website other than the cancellation of the 2020 race.

Swiftsure typically draws up to 200 yachts, hundreds of crew and thousands of supporters and spectators from Canada and the U.S. Almost two-thirds of the largest yachts involved in the longest races are American.

The organizing committee has more than 300 volunteers, and the support structure includes dozens of sponsors and ships and crew from the Canadian Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and search-and-rescue agencies.

The five-day event has long been considered a kickoff to the summer tourist season and it’s a boon for hotels, restaurants and bars.

“Swiftsure isn’t just a race, it’s an event,” McBride said. “And we want to be back for a strong event in 2022.”

For the first time in over two years, skippers have returned to the waters off Vancouver Island to partake in the 77th Swiftsure International Yacht Race.

This year’s race features 120 boats and over 1,300 participants on the seas, with the youngest racer participating this year being just four years old racing alongside her parents.
