Yah, but it's probably anger/frustration informed by  20+ years of dealing with the same f@#kery every summer.  Completely avoidable accidents and incidents repeating themselves over and over.

The idea of bumping up parking rates to cover a full-time bylaw officer (or perhaps a team of one cop, one bylaw) is a great idea..  Hell, build/open a concession stand, and use the profits from that to help pay, also..

in the past they had/have food trucks there.

but yes it's the same thing over and over.  probably no hot summers go by without articles about the issues.

It's also an issue at Sooke Potholes, it's an issue at East Sooke Park, it's an issue anywhere there is the potential for people to do stupid things.

🔺🔺No swimming at Thetis Lake Regional Park; people and pets advised not to enter the lake due to poisonous algae bloom🔺🔺

The CRD has issued a warning as of August 16th to keep individuals and pets from swimming at the popular Thetis Lake Regional Park due to a blue-green algae bloom.

The algae can produce cyanotoxins and Island Health is advising individuals of potential health ramifications. Nearby Prior Lake is also affected by the advisory.

Ingesting water with the algae can lead to headaches and abdominal pain in people, and lead to lethal liver damage in dogs.

From the CRD: The algae usually produce a visible blue-green sheen, which appears as surface scum on the water. Not all blooms are easy to see and toxins can still be present in the water even if you cannot see a bloom. Blooms are unpredictable and may occur at any time.

These algae are known toxin producers. Ingesting water containing these cyanotoxins may cause a range of symptoms, including headaches and abdominal pain in humans, and can lead to lethal liver damage in dogs.

We have noticed that there has been an unusual growth of plant life in Prospect Lake this year.

Higher temperatures? Increased nutrient loading? The septic tanks and fields have been serviced better since the CRD 5 year pump out rule.

Dunno.

black press was able to save the ink for at least three 's's in this story:

https://www.vicnews....at-thetis-lake/

also in the first sentence the rcmp will be reporting suspicious activity?

anyway i thought the problem was alcohol use and cliff jumping.  can you manage all that from the water?

Keep parks on the West Shore safe and report suspicious activity right away – that’s what West Shore RCMP will be doing while increasing their patrolling at popular summer locations.

Officer are teaming up with CRD Park Bylaw officers to patrol parks and will be joining View Royal Fire and Rescue on boats to patrol the water at Thetis Lake.

“We know that our parks in the West Shore are frequented by both local and tourists in the summer season,” said Const. Nancy Saggar, media relations officer.

“We routinely receive calls for service in these high traffic area.

The chief says he plans to meet with the Capital Regional District, which operates the park, to discuss tough new measures to crack down on alcohol abuse and other misbehaviour in the park.

"If it means closing the park, that's an option maybe," Hurst says. "I'm going to be researching and presenting a bylaw amendment in the fall where I'm going to do everything I can to make sure the costs associated with pulling you out of the back of the park because you're so drunk you can't walk, I'm going to send you that bill. And if you're a minor, I'm going to send it to your parents because I don’t see too many parents picking up the phone thanking me for picking up their 15-year-old who is drunk in the back of the lake."

Hurst says a bill of between $2,500 and $3,500 would be appropriate for an unnecessary rescue in the park.

"We'll hit them where it hurts," he says. "Is it going to stop it? Probably not, but it will sure be a painful kick when you get a $2,500 bill in the mail because your child was acting irresponsibly in the park."

we already have laws against being drunk in the park and possessing open alcohol in the park and as a minor.  use those.

The CRD mandates that all septic tanks within the CRD region must be pumped every 5 yearsSeptic tanks are usually almost always pumped out prior to real estate transactions as well.

just put in some type of dynamic pricing system. before 9am should be free. 9-6 is $1 an hour in high season. anybody that owns a car can afford $1 per carload per hour for “free” family swimming.

use video display to adjust pricing often seasonally.

get into 2021. not 1975 parking technology.

View Royal staff have proposed a bylaw that could make cliff jumping illegal at the popular Thetis Lake Regional Park, where every year many emergency rescue operations occur, mostly for drunk revellers who didn’t make the jump.

________________

Cliff jumping is a dangerous activity, especially in this location where the ledge is 30 to 40 metres above the water

https://www.vicnews....etis-lake-park/

View Royal Fire Rescue advised staff the minimum cost to the town for their emergency response is around $2,000 per hour. Currently View Royal foots the bill, and after decades of trying everything from public education to asking for fences, they’ve had enough.

how big of an area is this where the jumping occurs?  can't they lightly fence it, and mark it out of bounds, with a fine for even entering that area?

also 30 or 40 metres above the water?  that can't be right.  a 40m free-fall has you going a tad over 100km at impact with the water.  that's going to be fatal often.  do they mean 30-40 feet?

is this the area?

Why not install a proper jumping pad/ramp?

It’s expensive to design, build, install, maintain. Costs would be recouped from user fees (parking) or tax increase.
Ironically It would probably result in more injuries than are occurring now.

If it’s a properly engineered pad/ramp why would it result in more injury than normal park use?

It is that area, and then south along that entire little peninsula. Additionally, it is straight across the lake to the far side, right in the area of the screenshot with the exposed rock.

30-40m seems a bit excessive. I'd be surprised if there was anything over 10m.

And hard to fence off the entire cliff jumping area, since there are so many spots it can be done. Hell, you can do it from the island too.

Here is a guy slacklining above the water at 40 m:

The new Malahat Skywalk is 40 metres.

Empress Hotel is 35.4 metres.

The Legislature dome is 44.2 metres.
