Victoria police and firefighters are on the scene of a natural gas leak at the intersection of Caledonia Avenue and Quadra Street near downtown.

And we haven't even had an earthquake, so can you imagine how many gas leaks we would have in a seismic event. The gas lines going over the Bay Street bridge would be vulnerable, as that bridge has not been upgraded to seismic standards being asked of the Johnson Street Bridge.

I hope this is dealt with faster than the fiasco at the foot of the Bay Street Bridge from earlier this year.

Gas leak on Herald, Douglas to Blanshard.
Worst part is Blanshard is closed to southbound traffic at Caledonia.

Was wondering too. Tons of police, fire, and ambulances pretty much surrounding the Jack Davis building. Was thinking it was a bomb threat or some government bureaucrat went postal or maybe a problem at the abandoned construction site.

Access Gas is out canvassing the neighbourhoods to get you to convert to their plan that guarantees that your natural gas rate will not change when prices rise.

What do other gas users think of this plan, and is it worth it?

And when prices go down....?

They will be using all the same infrastructure that is already in place so they must have to lease those lines from Fortis, is that going to be any cheaper?

I don't know.

I don't know.

The guy at the door said that Fortis buys it's gas from the US, and Access will get it from Canadian sources.

But if Access can offer that kind of deal why can't Fortis?

From Fortis web site.....

How does a gas marketer's typical offering differ from the standard FortisBC's arrangement?

Gas marketers offer FortisBC customers the opportunity to lock into a fixed commodity rate for a term ranging from one to five years.

FortisBC, on the other hand, is fully regulated by the BC Utilities Commission. Our commodity rates can change up to four times each year. We buy gas on behalf of our customers and pass the cost of the commodity on without mark up. That means you pay what we pay.

Gas supply How does a gas marketer supply natural gas to my business?

The gas marketer secures the natural gas from much the same supply sources FortisBC does then makes arrangements for FortisBC to supply the gas to your operation. Note there is no effective interruption to your service during this process.

I don't see much appeal; the fixed rate they are offering is much higher than the current variable rate.  Also, the natural gas futures markets predict gas prices to stay low through the winter.

Through the winter yes. What is the predicted price in 2 or 3 years though? $5 or $6?

If gas was more volatile, it'd be more intriguing. Has anyone ever tried something like this with gasoline?

No idea.

The Utilities Commission isn't doing homeowners any favours by making us place bets on natural gas prices.  To make an informed choice, I'd need to learn a lot about gas production, distribution, and demand.

Ain't nobody got time for that!

Feel for people trying to leave and up against just a massive traffic jam.

Look at Google Maps traffic data for the Andover area...just orange and red and burgundy everywhere.
