^ Hmmm, well if no one wastes money on them, they won't get made anymore...

It is within your lifetime that movies only could be seen at movie theaters. The industry survived under that business model.

^ Yes, of course they did, because that was the only place you could see movies w/o commercials and with any sort of fidelity. Now that everyone can watch on a 42" screen with decent stereo, there is a lot less call to go out.

I find there is enough movies to watch on HBO, Movie Central etc. that I have never rented a dvd. (I have two nice blu-ray players that I have never used.) I look ahead a week or so on the guide and PVR any that look interesting and then watch them at my leisure.

Most of them are in HD with surround sound and I have found the video/sound quality just fine.

Every once in awhile we will look at a VOD offering that interests us and purchase it.
Life's a journey......so roll down the window and enjoy the breeze.

HDTV and VOD is usually Dolby Digital 5.1, same as on DVD. Better than Nefflix sound quality by quite a bit, and definitely better picture quality than DVD.

But there's a clear difference when you move up to Blu-ray.

Picked up a few DVDs at the Fort and Foul Bay Blockbuster. Sale ends October 1 or when stock runs out.

I almost never watch movies more than once, just doesn't make sense for me to buy them.

I popped into Blockbuster today but my coffee was burning my hand so I didn't stay long.

Looking pretty bare in there. Something sad about walking into a store that's on its last legs.

This is why you always burn a copy of the movie you rent. The store you rent it from will at some point go out of business and you'll end up having to resort to downloading it illegally anyway :P

Kidding, of course ;)

Interesting story (from 2003) about the guy that started Blockbuster, how he came up with the concept, which is really kinda simple.

That was the best business story that I have read in months. Thanks. :)

Rented a movie for the first time in over a month tonight.

Blockbuster used to be 3 minutes away. Had a quick look at another local independant store but didn't exactly get the warm and fuzzies there.

Ended up driving down to Rogers at Quadra village. Big store, not very busy, new release selection seemed poor, at least for blu-ray rentals. Now that it's a cross-town trip to rent and return a movie I guess I won't be renting much anymore.

Oak Bay Blockbuster was always busy, it's a shame it had to go.

Telus/Shaw VOD? I've been trying to help our local video store stay open by renting there but at times VOD is just easier. Do you have access to VOD?

I do, but it's $7.99 for an HD new release :o

I've also got a bit of a beef with service provider's M.O. when it comes to bandwidth caps in attempt to make their VOD services more appealing.

I can't help but think how the demise of video stores will further increase casual piracy.

The limited selection of movies at the hotel here in Vancouver are $15.99 plus taxes. Why not just use the hotel's wireless to download something from Netflix, or just watch something you've already downloaded. This would be a business that is dying I'm sure. I mean, it's cheaper to go to HMV's closing out sale and buy a DVD.

Yikes, $16 for a movie rental? You'd have to be mad!

My iPhone's new "video" store rents and sells movies that are downloaded directly onto the device. A rental is $5! The purchase price is $20!

Dumb teenagers relying on their parents credit cards to pay their phonebills might tap into this, but any self respecting adult surely would never fork over $20 to buy a digital movie when a DVD is usually available for far less.

I wanted to get a copy of Cars 2 yesterday. It was over $30 at Future Shop!

No wonder people rented and ripped:rolleyes:

Looks like Rogers is closing all their "Rogers Plus" stores by January.

Oh wow

Often I will pop in to pay my phone bill. The place is always a ghost town.

Years back you had two lineups.
