Really, chances are, if you don't buy food/beverage onboard, your fare is being subsidized by those who are, really.

With booze yeah, I can totally see that.

Sure, but before they had a very favourable exchange rate when paying with cash. Now to buy anything there will be an added cost that could easily increase the cost of a $5 item closer to $6.

.

I think Rosebud's problem was that the ship does not accept cash, so paying cash and getting dinged an unfavourable exchange rate won't happen.

And with the $C being higher than the $US you shouldn't get dinged there either if you are using a credit card.

Gorge Video Station is cash only. One of the few ma and pa operations that have survived the video apocalypse.

I see that the Market On Yates is going to get an actual software fix to their systems to deal with the penny issue.

So.... I guess at some point they have to ask "cash or debit/credit?" Do they ask after you see the total? Of course, some truly thrifty people will pay cash when they round down, and debit/credit when it a appears a round-up is going to happen.

I wonder if when the Market cashier is at the total, he/she can just toggle back and forth between the cash and paper amounts.

At Red Barn I got the impression the cashier could toggle between the two options. Normally I pay with debit but the other day I had cash and she rounded down for me without any problems or hiccups.

There must be an update available for all point of sale terminals that can be easily installed to add this functionality.

Where I work there is no update for our old IBM POS computers. I'm not sure if it's because the boss is unwilling to buy temporary software to assist employees in doing grade one arithmetic or if our software has no update available.

If it's old it's likely not supported by the distributor of the software (may or may not be IBM).

Over the span of a day the till could be several dollars if not dozens of dollars out of sync with expected revenue. Every business should invest into upgrades to systems or software.

^Why, if the staff are rounding according to the rules?

Huh?

At the end of the day, a retailer doing 10,000 cash transactions in a day will be up a good $$$ - every day.

0's and 5's are not rounded, 1/6's and 2/7's go down, the others go up.

One doing 1,000 cash transactions might be up a very few dollars.

^ Shouldn't it just come out even? Or are you thinking that it is more likely to round up in price than down.

That's a good point, things should even out.

Oh ya, I was thinking of the retailer win in rounding up to the penny after tax.

0 - no round

1,2,3,4 round down

5,6,7,8,9, round up.

But in this penny rounding, it is dead even.

I am sure that smart retailers can price their products so that they most likely will always come ahead in the penny game. I would. But likely too early for that to have occurred.

I wish all listed prices were with tax included. So if something was 3.00 you'd go up and give them $3 and walk off.

I think taxes should always be shown separately for the sake of visibility. Transparency is good. Otherwise, you have no idea what the hell you are paying for. I think people need to be (painfully) reminded at every corner what their society is costing them.

I agree, and if people were paid a decent wage you could eliminate tipping as well. in Mexico waiters make about $5.50 a day, and only eke out a living because of tips.

Doesn't the retailer get a 10% better chance of winning?

Consumer gets 4 out of 10 chances, retailer gets 5 out of 10.

Ya, that's when adding tax.

But penny change:

0/5 - no round
1,2,6,7, round down, retailer loses a cent or two
3,4,8,9, round up, retailer gains a cent or two

I know I shouldn't care because it is only a cent or two, but it irks me when the price is rounded up.

So does'nt it now make cents to get rid of the nickel?
