Open Victoria has reported that Dean Fortin received in excess of $55,000 for his campaign in 2008.

The top three donors were the BC Government Employees’ Union ($8,000), Canadian Auto Workers ($6,000 total), Victoria Labour Council ($4,000 total).

Together the three unions handed the mayor $18,000.

...and a razor-thin victory of around 600 votes. Let's hope that their money is pissed away this time around.

Ouch, this is just Victoria, how much union money is spent each time around the province?

I'm glad I dont pay union dues as I'd be some choked if this was where they were wasting it!!! Gotta say its quite ironic that these are the same folks that shout from the rooftops if some "mega" business made a political donation, but its okay for them...nice double standard.

This looks like strike #2 in this election. First the use of the NDP's voter lists to obtain contact details for NDP supporters, and now the questionable use of the City of Victoria's logo to brand the Mayor's campaign.

Without prompting, mayoral candidate Paul Brown is quick to offer that he’s chosen not to use the City of Victoria’s intellectual property as part of his election platform.

To do so would be unethical, he said.

The comment was a dig at Mayor Dean Fortin, whose own campaign website boasted the city’s logo.

While not contrary to any election laws, it’s a practice some other incumbent mayoral candidates in B.C. have chosen not to follow. No city logo can be seen on the campaign website for Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, Duncan Mayor Phil Kent, or Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan.

Ouch, this is just Victoria, how much union money is spent each time around the province?

And that's just $18,000 on the mayor, and just the top three. Various unions spent many thousands more on council candidates.

Certainly a big strike for me was NOT shaking Paul Brown's hand after the all candidates debate.
That is extremely telling IMO. Very poor sportsmanship for a 'team' player.

Unrelated observation...Rob Fleming MLA. His name shows up twice on the list of contributors. Once for $100 and again for $500.

I wonder if one was a personal donation and the other on behalf of the Office of Rob Fleming MLA?

Then I would expect the addresses to be different?
Probably means nothing, just an observation on my part.

I also noticed Howard Liptrot. His name shows up on Fortin, Alto and Madoff's declarations as the financial agent.
Once again, just an observation.

The MLA office would not be allowed to donate. They are two personal donations

I saw the (talking) head of the "Dean team" on the news tonight dithering on about the Occupy Victoria group and the delayed injunction from the BC Supreme Court. Why is it every time this man opens his mouth I feel my wallet getting lighter? The news report said the cost to maintain the OV "protestors" at Centennial Square has now reached over $100,000. Money well spent of course if this incites the voters to oust Deano and his cronies on November 19.

Yeah, first council passes a motion to support OV, then spins it's head like Linda Blair. :rolleyes:

I only caught part of it, but it seemed more like a grilling from Mr. Andrews over the fire hall than anything else.
