I think this is one of several closures over the last decade.

At the new hilltop maritime centre!

I am so sad to say goodbye to what has been an exceptional journey but excited and optimistic for what lies ahead.
We will all miss being here and being part of this neighbourhood and community.

I will update everyone soon but for now to answer the rumours- it is true. Sunday is our last day.

With great sadness, unwavering appreciation and the utmost gratitude,
Jessica

Very sad to see this happen.
For so many people in this neighbour the pub has been a place to meet friends, celebrate, commiserate, or just hang out and see who comes in. There would always be someone there that you knew.
It had great staff and good food. It was everything your ‘local’ should be.
It was a community pub that gave back to the community. We will miss it.

Owner Jessica confirmed the rumours on Friday that had started swirling online in regards to the popular watering hole shutting down for good.

“We are closing on Sunday due to our lease being up, and are not able to stay month to month at this time,” Barry said.

Barry declined to go into further details on how the negotiation process with the property owners played out and how things got to this point.

“Obviously we’re very sad and I wasn’t expecting to go anywhere. We all had big plans and big ideas for this next year and to not be able to have that is disheartening” She said.

The landlords declined to do an interview, but in an email said they and Barry simply could not reach an agreement on a lease renewal and that, despite online speculation, they have no plans for the building at this time.

Barry took over as the owner five years ago, but the pub’s history dates way further back than that.

I think this is one of several closures over the last decade.

i think the property owner has turned over tenants at least 3 times in the past 15 years.  someone else is likely to take over.

Ma Miller’s Pub in Langford is not renewing an agreement with the current operator.

Jessica Barry, who has operated the pub since 2016, confirmed Friday there was a “tenancy issue” with the landlord and her last day of operating the pub is Sunday.

It isn’t immediately known if the pub will close for a time after that, or continue under a new operator.

“We just want to let people know to come by and have a pint and say hello,” Barry said in an interview.

She did not want to elaborate on any issues with the landlord, saying only that she “wanted to stay” and “there was a notice we had to be out.”

i'm not sure.  can you read between the lines here?   are they behind on rent at the end of their 5-year lease?

An earlier telling of the story (albeit on Facebook) stated that the pub operators had been after the property owner to do some much needed upgrades to the facility in the process of negotiating a new lease ... and rather than discuss (or make) those upgrades, the property owner instead issued a letter stating that he would not be renewing their lease.

But it sure sounds like there's a bit more to the story than that? ... as all parties seem to have become particularly tight lipped with details since the initial story broke a couple of days ago.

Absolutely not! I wish people would stop coming up with suggestions of what went down.

it’s almost always the same.

landlord does not want to spend on upgrades or maintenance. tenant doesn’t want to either.

such is the way it goes.
