Ok guys, I need your help. I've got the next Victoria image ready to post....but I have NO idea where it falls. The only description I have is "Victoria Housing Project." It would be great to figure out what subdivision that is.

There are some clues... Those two islands off in the distance look pretty unique. And also that reservoir/lake thing just above the center of the frame. Could that be the Smith's Hill Reservoir? It looks different on Google Maps.

Photo is taken from the West looking East.

Intersection of Quadra and Finlayson just below the reservoir. You can see Quadra Elementary School West of the reservoir at that intersection.

The road on the left of the image appears to be Tolmie Ave, and you can see "Reed St" between Tolmie and Finlayson.

EDIT, yes, that's the Smith's Hill reservoir.

I see my house! This is a shot of what was then one of the very first "suburban" housing projects in BC. I always forget the name but sure that Holden could remind me.

I often find Bakers Bricks from that Factory on the bottom there in my yard while gardening. I really never fully understood the extent of its operations. So Toys R Us is below street level because it was part of the quarry too. Too bad that group of homes got wiped out for Staples...

The Islands are Chatham and Discovery and the CPR ship (Elaine or Princess Elizabeth - 3 funnels) can be seen heading for the Inner Harbour from Vancouver.

Below the ship can be seen the Willows Racetrack grandstand.

Sebberry got the subdivision and reservoir bang on.

The most interesting buildings are the old Baker Brick & Tile on land that is now Mayfair Mall. Their quarry is now Topaz Park.

Once again you can see the old V&S Railway right of way running across between the brickyard and the bottom row of new homes. Max zoom needed.

I like the Willows racetrack and what appears to be a CPR ship on it's way to the inner harbour.

MarkP, there must be a shot with Lansdowne airfield in your pile somewhere. This shot just missed it.

I did not know the V & S rail was way out there. Somehow I just assumed it came in the Lochside Trail and used the CN track to the harbour. Or maybe it did, and had a second spur? Becasue the trail/rail now does come that route from Lochside north of Quadra/McKenzie, then across Quadra behind the Winery.

Anybody know the route?

Roughly the V&S route was...

Station in the old Market building Where Centenial Square is, East on Fisgard to Blanshard (was Rose) north along what is Blanshard from Bay to Hillside, along Nanaimo Street and across the back of the brickyard and across what is now Cloverdale about where the Shaw building is now, up the hill to a section of Short Street and across the Uptown property.

One of the last reminders of the V&S can be seen at Ravine Way where there are some old concrete bridge abutments that carried the V&S over the tracks of the GN railway.

The Great Northern followed the Galloping Goose to Sidney.

Okay so far? Now back to the V&S route that heads north along Rowland and then an obsure route between Glanford and the Pat Bay Highway, coming out at the Postal Building on Vanalman. The steepest part of the grade was up the hill towards the intersection of Wilkinson Road and W. Saanich Road and then along Pipeline Road (Pipeline was the route the pipes from Beaver Lake took to supply water to the city. Then the V&S followed the west side of Elk Lake which is now part of the walking trail. It came out near Keating and it became Veyaness Road. The train crossed right in front of the Prairie Inn before going down Wallace Drive and across the Experimental Farm, the Bazan Bay Brick Co. and then along the waterfront to Sidney. That's about it.

Actually, a 5-year-old Centra Gas building got wiped out for Staples. Was the newest-ever building I've seen demolished.

And just up the hill to the left can be seen Spencer Castle.

Just on the left edge of the photo can be seen the old Normal School and clock tower, Now Camosun.

This was some type of subsidized or reserved-for veterans housing for those coming back from WW2. Many years ago I read the details somewhere.

I don't recall the name of the house. A picture of it from the BC archives has been posted on the forum before, possibly in the long gone greats thread, that showed the name.

BTW, I moved out.
