I am curious as to the source of this group's funding:
After a strong turnout and widespread interest in the recent community discussion regarding the renaming of Trutch Street in Victoria, the Indigenous Solidarity Welfare Group [ISWG] is hosting a smaller meeting Wednesday night to plan the next steps in this campaign. ISWG Organizers are touting the meeting as an opportunity for the community to learn more about the reasons why a renaming is necessary, how to keep up the momentum, and how to encourage wider efforts to decolonize places names throughout Lekwungen territory...

Maybe Ben Isitt is giving part of his salary to help fund the group. As if!

An alternative spelling on a small Victoria side street is no mistake.
“Penwill” is the proper name of a street that’s incorrectly been called “Penwell Street” for over 100 years.
In February the block-long side street, which runs between Humboldt Street and Burdett Road, was repatriated with the proper spelling after family members of the street’s namesake, Charles Tooley Penwill, reached out to the City of Victoria.

Either spelling wreaks of colonialism.

You beat me to it. He was a builder, so he very literally helped colonize the land. I'm guessing that they didn't run this renaming past the City Family? Otherwise there's no way in hell that they would correct the name of an icky WASP settler.

why is the road to the top of mt. tomie called "mayfair"? and why is the shopping centre named so? the brick company was called "baker".
The arrival of the newest member on the region’s retail scene prompted concerns from other businesses, fearing it would hurt trade in downtown Victoria.
Sound familiar?
It should. A similar debate continues as the new Uptown shopping centre, a few blocks north, replaced the Town and Country mall and continues to draw shoppers away from other retail districts.
In an ironic twist, the Mayfair area was referred to as Uptown in the 1960s.
A 1964 Daily Colonist story was titled Uptown Vs. Down. It was about the new Uptown Merchants Association, formed to promote business in that area, and an expected retail competition.
Major downtown merchants, the Hudson’s Bay Co. and the T. Eaton Co., extended their hours to attract customers.

Mayfair is a swanky part of London so I don't know why they wasted it on a little lane up a hill rather than an upscale part of Victoria. The original name came from the fact that a fair was held in that part of England in the month of May starting in the 1600s.
I don't think there's any significance to why it was named that in Saanich. Just another imported name from the Old Country.

speaking of swank(y) i think mayfair is also a british soft **rn magazine.
seems odd we have no more background on this. streets off of mayfair include cromwell lorraine bonair camcrest and glastonbury.

When exactly did Kelly Road suddenly extend all the way to Jacklin Road? For as long as spring followed winter Kelly ended at Phipps (west of Veterans), then Jenkins began. Now Kelly runs all the way to Jacklin, then Jenkins begins.
These shots are from Phipps (entrance to West Shore Town Centre).

Mike, that's curious. When I was going to Belmont (waaay back), I'm positive that Kelly Rd ran from Sooke Rd. straight through to Jacklin Rd. Jenkins didn't start until you crossed Jacklin, heading into Glen Lake. I have an old Davenport map (1992) that shows it that way. This was before they pushed the Langford Parkway and Veteran's Memorial through that area. Phipps Rd used to end around the gravel pits on Attree (the other side of the mall). I suspect when they connected Phipps to Kelly, for some reason they renamed that stretch to the west as Jenkins. Now, it seems that after they finished the Belmont Market project, they've switched the name back again to Kelly Rd. I never even noticed...man, I gotta start paying more attention.

Ah, yes that makes sense. Reunion Avenue was also named Division Avenue during Belmont Market's approvals phase.
