Mike Kozakowski of VibrantVictoria.ca won the Community Builder Award for the community-driven news forum. “This award is a recognition of the many individuals (that’s you, VV’ers!) who love to keep our community informed on as many different issues as there are opinions in our city,” was posted on VibrantVictoria.ca along with a photo of the award.

And for the record, it is very odd to have photos of myself circling around the Interwebs.

Fantastic news. Congrats to all here who contribute.
It is a sad state that we are in where our local newspaper is so biased against social media, that it did not make one mention of ANY winner in any category from last night's award ceremony. Their online article this morning should have shown more responsibility.
I also thought that VHF should have won the best facebook page. If you have been to I heart Downtown Victoria, you would probably agree with me.
^ Yes, agree fully on all 3 points, particularly on VHF's Facebook page, I <3 Downtown Victoria. It's awesome on Facebook, and VV is awesome everywhere!

The TC mentioned Mike's win today so they didn't ignore VV. As much as I enjoy VV and value the content, the reality is that the TC claims 100K readers while VV has a total of 2.2K members and 350 people who have ever made more than 10 posts. I think that the TC doesn't give VV credit simply because they don't view VV as being significant :-)

But if we are to compare apples to apples we should remember that the TC draws from a pool of 750,000 residents (V.I.) and being the major daily receives national attention. VV draws from 350,000 (greater Victoria) and while the TC is a daily source of Island news, VV is as much a reference as it is a source of certain issues vetted on a daily basis. In short VV and the TC are similar in some ways and very different in others.
As for the TC viewing VV as "significant" or not, we obviously have no way of knowing that ourselves, but when the paper recently ran a poll on its online edition to ask where their readers supplement their news, VV was mentioned along with the other media in this city. One can assume if VV wasn't seen by other media as a source of news for local residents it wouldn't have been listed as an option (and it was the only non-mainstream media option).
I know I speak for the entire mod team here when I say that we sincerely appreciate the mention in the TC.

Thanks again to all of our readers and contributors that truly make all of this happen on a daily basis.
The content that can be viewed here can vary from a stash of aerial photos from yesteryear, to developers sharing for the first time plans of a new development literally hours after a news release, to would be politicians that desire to make a difference.
Add to that a couple of jokes here and there, and some posts about goings on in a particular neighborhood.... and you end up with a forum that is as diverse as it's audience.

Mike....Bob is right. Time to nuke yesterday's news and make it mobile friendly.
Thanks Bob.

Mike was thinking about deleting it and moving on. I think I was the one to tell him to keep it.

You could also eliminate the Latest Local News at the top of the page, which mentions items up to two months old. There seems to be a lot more scrolling with the new design to get you to the bottom of the page.

This year, we did not feel right to nominate ourselves for awards (and I guess nobody else bothered to do it for us). Plus the categories are a little different this year.
Plus we wanted to step down to spend more time with our respective families.
SMC goes tomorrow through Wednesday this week, I'll be speaking for an hour on Wednesday.
Anybody going this year?

A whole hour?
Well, my time slot is one hour. I suppose I could speak for 45 minutes, then take questions for 15 minutes. But I have well over an hour's material. My social media lunches always go over 90 minutes.
Remember, most of my stuff is just a carefully edited and re-crafted version of the Gettysburg Address.
