I think those are still limited.

I assume all cruisers have speed detection and license plate cameras on at all times. Not true?

No, there’s only of handful of units that have the license plate readers in each department across the CRD.
Speed detection is in almost every unit but needs to be activated I believe. They normally use their handheld scopes.

Police investigate serious collision involving cyclist

West Shore

2024-03-24

File # 2024-5560

On March 24, at approximately 4:45 p.m., Westshore RCMP responded to a report of a collision involving a single vehicle and a cyclist at the intersection of Island Highway and Burnside Road West, in View Royal.

West Shore RCMP Frontline and Traffic Unit officers attended the scene and learned a sedan had struck a cyclist at this location. The cyclist, identified as a 55-year old male, was taken to hospital via BC Emergency Health Services for life-threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle, identified as a 21-year-old male, remained on scene and is cooperative with the police investigation.

Burnside Rd. West eastbound lanes were shut down for a number of hours allowing for officers to conduct their work. A Collision Reconstructionist was called to the scene and the cause of the collision is still under investigation, though police can confirm drug and alcohol impairment was ruled out for the driver.

Burnside Rd West is expected to reopen some time overnight on March 25. West Shore RCMP will provide an update to this release later in the week once more information becomes available.

Hopefully somebody starts a GoFundMe.

Although he seems on a good path, at least as judged by his attitude.

The driver T-boned in a Victoria intersection, sending his truck flying into a BC Transit bus, is recovering at home and reflecting on the crash that sent him to hospital with serious injuries.

David Bruun, 34, was driving home from teaching jiu-jitsu Wednesday night when a car speeding southbound on Douglas ran a red light at the Bay Street intersection, smashing into Bruun’s truck.

The force of the crash sent Bruun’s truck flying into a bus, completely smashing it.

“I keep wondering if I could have maybe seen him coming and I don’t know when slammed on my brakes or something, or avoided it in some way,” Bruun told CHEK News. “You don’t think to do that usually when you got a green light, but hindsight is 20/20, right?”

Bruun is recovering from a fractured neck, three fractures in his C1 vertebrae, organ bleeds and a major concussion.

He said he has no memory of the crash even happening, adding he was shocked to see footage of what happened.

“I definitely had a bit of painkillers in me, so I kind of thought it looked cool. I guess that’s not the worst way to take it,” Bruun laughed. “I’ve never seen that happen in a vehicle. I’m very glad I came out of that in one piece, head still attached, you know.”

Bruun will be out of work for at least six months. He said he will likely not be allowed to participate in jiu-jitsu for much longer.

The owners of Van Isle Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, where Bruun teaches, started a GoFundMe page to help offset Bruun’s upcoming costs.

“We know the whole ICBC thing can take a long time and just try to relieve some stress for Dave and also to show him he is appreciated and loved by our community,” Matthew De Groot, co-owner, said.

Well at least they started the GoFundMe.  It's not like the old days, he does not have a big ICBC payout coming.

https://www.hom-law....al gross income.

Unfortunately, under the new no-fault system British Columbians have lost the right to sue for personalized compensation, presenting a further limitation to the compensation available to them.

___________________

Under the no-fault system, BC residents may be eligible to receive income replacement compensation if injury from an accident results in being unable to work. Income replacement benefits are based on 90% of your regular income.

___________________

If you’re the driver at fault, that means you’ll face no punishment other than an incremental increase to your ICBC insurance premiums. Your insurance will cover your own injuries suffered, and if the victim faces serious injuries, you’ll be off the hook. Notably, this rule change drastically removes accountability for unsafe, risk-taking drivers.

Indeed it does. And it must change back.

Or we finally give up ICBC and go private, like with everything else we insure. I mean we don’t even have insured motorists in a shocking number of cases as there is no more visual cue on license plates so people ‘forget.’

And now we’re back into fuel theft season again. Guard your gas tanks.

Outside of ICBC, the police can criminally charge, right?

They only cover 90% of your lost income? That’s lame.

That’s no fault. It does keep your premium down substantially.

Three years ago people were talking about crazy ICBC rate increases. And dumpster fire.

Now it’s all under control.

Covering 100% is really the straw here? Come on.

I guess the argument is if you aren’t working due to injury, you’re not spending money getting to work, buying work clothes, lunches, etc so your costs are less?

No, the idea is to have some way to combat fraud and abuse.  If you got 100% people might find a way to claim that more often, ratther than work.  Same reason EI is not 100%.

A driver T-boned in a Victoria intersection whose vehicle was thrown into a transit bus and broke apart on impact will be unable to work for about six months as he recovers from a bleeding kidney, bleeding lungs, a fractured vertebra, whiplash and a concussion.

David Bruun, 34, was driving home from work about 10:30 p.m. on March 20 when a speeding driver heading southbound through the intersection at Douglas and Bay streets ran a red light and slammed into his pickup truck, sending the vehicle crashing into a bus.

Bruun was discharged from hospital Monday and is at home resting and feeling grateful that his injuries weren’t worse.

“I got out of that miraculously well,” he said by phone Wednesday. “Looking at what happened to my truck, the back end evaporated, just disappeared from smashing into the bus so hard. I’m so glad somehow I lived through that.”

Why have we heard nothing more about the person responsible for this tragedy?

Perhaps they are a member of a privileged group.

I'm not sure why we would.

Police will likely be hard at work trying to make sure they can prove he was driving, and gathering evidence of his speed.

Maybe they will announce when a charge is laid, maybe not.  We rarely hear about this type of thing, short of deaths.

Seems fine to clawback on the ei, but an injury from a car wreck? Yeah, I guess people get doctors to lie.
