Today's deal:
30 needed, 789 bought so far...
It is a great deal for consumers but not so much for the business.
The problem I have with their business model is that no money stays in the community.
Groupon is a corporation based in Chicago that is in over 100 cities. They are worth over a billion dollars.
For the $16 they receive for this deal, $8 goes to the merchant.
I understand that they have bills to pay but nothing stays here in Victoria.

No business needs to do it. It seems to me that things like this WildPlay one are a good deal for the company, they have limited "costs" to allow another person on the course. Also, of the 1000 they look like they might sell today, some number will never show up before the coupon expires (so they get $8 for nothing), and many will bring friends paying full pop.
With only 365 things/events per year, at least for now, they can afford to charge a good hefty fee. I'm sure Groupon will get competitors in a hurry.

And some friendly rivalry...

That is the problem with the model. People will sign up for as many services as they can to get the widest variety of coupons and offers. No way to build a unique brand.

Anyone else noticing a lot of Groupon ads from Google on this site now?

Today's deal - $4 for one menu item and a beverage at Puerto Vallarta Amigos (up to $10.50 value). Food truck is at Wharf & Yates weekdays from 11 - 3pm.

I run grocery alerts - grocery deal and coupon website and every ad was groupon at one point. I finally blocked them because I was sick of those ads.
I am also trying to start a local coupon voucher site that actually gives money back to a local charity. I want to keep jobs and money in Victoria.

Didn't think that you were allowed to discount alcohol like that in BC.
Bought a coupon anyways!

You can just say you have discounted the food to nothing and the beer stays the same.
They are nearing 1000 sold, that means they have moved $30k worth of goods in a few hours. Crazy.

For restaurants, they take 50% of the sales. So if your deal is $30 worth of stuff for $15, you get $7.50. 80% of the coupons are redeemed, fully 20% never get used.
So....
1000 sales x $7.50.
800 redeemed, so you give out $24,000 at full retail and yo get $7500 for your troubles.
Groupon pays the business by cheque, 1/3 the day after the deal closes, then 1/3 at 30 days out, then another 1/3 at 60 days out. This way they can make sure they are not hearing back from clients that report having trouble redeeming their coupons, and allows them to make 100% returns to anyone not satisfied.
Groupon has 43,000 Victoria email addys.

This is one of those business models that makes you say "now why didn't I think of that?!"
