I have seen the new Vancity busses on the road, has anyone driven or riden in one? I found them nice, they have a very tight turning radius.

Talldude123, your signature says your are a BC Transit Operator, how does this bus drive in your opinion? Do you drive the route 3 ever?

I am an operator; however I work out of the Langford garage. I've only driven the Vicinity bus inside the Langford yard when it was on display a few weeks ago. I thought it was an interesting little bus. Much more maneuverable than the Dennis Dart 35-foot buses and felt well-built.

I did see the Vicinity at the Bay Center unloading; I was driving by as a Rt 21.

I don't think I'll be able to drive that bus in revenue service for quite some time as management told me that the bus will only be out of Victoria garage.

How do you guys change garages? Do you apply against a position or is it seniority? Are you always at one garage? I've always been curious.

At every signup (where we choose work), there are different pieces of work out of each garage. Depending on seniority, you get what you get.

However, if you choose Spareboard (work for people who are sick or no-show) or Holiday blocks (Working people's holidays), you work out of whichever yard is specified.

Currently there are 520 drivers, but BCT is looking for 20 more.

I've heard they are really having trouble hiring, people balk at having to work years at some sort of training wage.

As far as a driving job goes, it's not very pleasant for many. You can't have the radio or tunes on, and you have more things to keep track of than just your vehicle on the road.

The small feeder buses play radio audible to all passengers (last two times I've been on them in June that was the case), and I regularly see drivers listening to music via single ear piece (not sure if that's permitted or not, but it's done).

Hello. I have a few questions about BC Transit that I'm not sure if anyone here would know the answer to but thought I would ask just in case.

Firstly why do some buses that terminate in the same place have different locations on their sign? Take the 8, 21, 22N and 39 (when stopping any terminate at Camosun) for example. The 8 says "Interurban", the 21 says "Camosun" and the 22N and 39 say "Camosun-Interurban". I can understand the 8 not just saying "Camosun" as it goes by the Lansdowne campus as well so that might confuse people.

Next I can understand some routes like the 30 changing on evenings but Sunday doesn't make a lot of sense. Is there no demand for transit to Beacon Hill park on a Sunday? Also if it is a demand issue why do the 27/28 start going to Beacon Hill when the 30 stops? The sign is also confusing as both the 30 and 31 leaving Royal Oak say "James Bay via Oswego". I would think just changing the 30 during these times to a "31A James Bay via Carey" or something would be more helpful. The 22N coming from Camosun makes no sense either as from the looks of it it is just the 21. I haven't riden it myself but the sign says "22N Downtown via Interurban" and I've seen them in areas that makes it seem like they're just a 21. Why no just run a 21?

Lastly, why does the 6 terminate infront of Chapters? I haven't been riding Transit for too long but from what I've heard it used to go to the Dockyard and followed the route the 15 now takes once it hit Yates. Why when they changed this didn't they send it down to the Blanshard or Legislature terminus? (I guess as a side note why does everything from the Dockyard aside from the 25A go to Uvic now?)

Ha! Great observations. There are all sorts of oddities with our transit system routes, numbers included.

27 and 28 going into Beacon Hill Park /James Bay in evenings might just be to let them cover more territory and run less frequent while still doing something.

The numbers so seem weird. For example most of the "1X" routes go to Uvic except the 10 and 19 and then the 4, 26 and 39 go to Uvic and aren't "1X" routes. The 51 makes sense because most the Langford/Colwood buses are in the 50s (except again the 39. That route seems to come up a lot in oddities).

Ya the first digit does not really mean much. Seems to me they could go 3-digit and then have them make some better sense.

Hello everyone. There seems to be no alert on BC Transit's website for this (I guess because there's no detour? Would still be nice) so I thought I should post. If you're waiting for a bus that goes down Markham street (39, 83 and the 21 from the technology park) you should prepare for some delays. They started some construction last week and it didn't seem too bad but today I was waiting for the 11:02 39 (to Uvic from Camosun) and at around 11:05 a 83 heading to Sydney came (scheduled at 10:47) and the 39 I was waiting for finally came as the 8 I ended up taking after giving up was leaving at 11:15. This 39 just runs between Camosun and Uvic most the day so that's why I was still affected since it was delayed coming from Uvic to start the route at 11:02. I can't comment on the 21 as the one that was scheduled to leave that I saw was a Viaduct one so it didn't go up Markham at all although the construction is between VITP and Camosun so I'd imagine it's affected too.
