The City of Victoria appears to have acted first and asked questions later when it removed an information plaque near the summit of Beacon Hill Park.

The plaque was removed recently by city staff after a resident complained about it, although a city spokesperson could not specify what exactly the complainant was concerned about.

In a statement, the city said the plaque had been temporarily removed while the city assessed the wording on it.

“No decision has been made about the future of the plaque,” the city said.

A city spokesperson said “staff made the decision to remove the plaque and we are looking in to how and why that decision was made.”

The city is also trying to determine what exactly on the plaque triggered the complaint.

It takes very little to trigger people these days.

I wonder if this is the plaque in question. https://www.flickr.c...2mWs29r-daC7Cs/

I could see Wokies being upset about the wording "when Victoria was settled in 1843 this area was a natural park"...  (because it was already settled by natives prior to 1843, and was not a 'park' already - it was an area where they cultivated and harvested camas - though it may have looked like a park because the natives actively removed/burned vegetation in order to make the fields open).

If this is the plaque in question, I think there's a good case to be made that it should be updated to reflect why the area looked like a park to the european settlers when they got here. But I'm sure the update will include a lot more white guilt than just pure information.

I find it comical nobody know why it was removed. Or so they say. Big comms department, no ready answers.

I imagine the communications department is working on the equity and inclusivity of the official message. I am sure it needs to be vetted through several focus groups before being made public.

They know, they just have to have their 12 PR people poll the focus groups before they provide their answer!
