She already refers to it as Meegan park… she is such a liar

What is interesting is that the name Meegan is relatively new. It was invented by Jimmy Fraser  about 75 years after the park was named Beacon Hill.

I thought it was interesting that yesterday on CFAX the chair of the CRD said that Victoria is in no danger of running out of water any time soon and that they'd even purchased another watershed area. So there's absolutely no excuse for all these horrible plantings we now have. Enough with the damn oregon grape.

Will the just-released Stantec safety report (that was kept secret from the public), have any bearing on the BHP sheltering court case on Monday?

Just to clarify, it was not released, it was leaked, and it was leaked in a draft form from September of last year. A year later it doesn’t sound like the actual report has been delivered. That in itself is very odd.

Know it all.

I am surprised so many peacocks survived the occupation of BHP.

Seem to have multiplied.

I thought someone here a long time ago said this was gone.

Beacon Hill Park’s putting green has officially opened for the summer season, adding to the extensive list of activities on offer at “the crowning jewel” of Victoria’s parks network.

The City of Victoria announced the opening in a tweet Tuesday (May 10), inviting the public to bring their putters and golf balls for some free fun.

Beyond the putting green, the park’s 740,000 square metres also feature amenities like two playgrounds, two spray parks, tennis courts, a baseball diamond, cricket pitch, stage, picnic shelters, meadows, flowerbeds, and the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm.

Golf seems terribly "settlerish" to me.

I would like to help all of those who are running for Mayor or Council gain understanding by inviting them to a Beacon Hill Park walk-through from the parking lot by the petting zoo to the parking lot by Arbutus Way. It is an ask for no more than one-hour of their time.

As part of their journey to understand park accessibility, I am asking each of them to bring two bags filled with 5-10 pounds of food that can be donated to a local food bank post walk. The candidates will be asked to carry these on our walk. I am also asking that they bring something to restrict their ability to use their legs, be it leg weights, or something that limits the length of their stride and ability to step over obstacles.

On Sunday, October 2 at 2:00 PM members of the MS Wellness Centre and I will guide participating candidates through the park in an effort to help them better understand the many challenges people with disabilities face and why so many can no longer access the park.

I like the challenge! They should make it a candidate race. 10lb bag of canned food and legs tied together with a 1ft rope!

This reminds me of when I bound myself to a wheelchair for a day while at Carleton Uni. For a project. What a pain! I was able to get everywhere but sometimes had to travers long distances to travel just a short way. That said I was not experienced nor did I have an agile chair.

The Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations have applied to be interveners in the province’s upcoming appeal of a B.C. Supreme Court ruling that effectively banned camping in Beacon Hill Park.

Lawyer Robert Janes said from Vancouver on Tuesday that the First Nations want to ensure that when B.C. Court of Appeal judges look at public interest and recreational use in the park, they also keep in mind Indigenous use, since the park was part of the nations’ territory and used as a village site.

Janes said the nations don’t want the 1882 Beacon Hill Park Trust, which governs use of the park, to be interpreted in an overly narrow way that would prevent First Nations’ interests being considered in the future, since Court of Appeal decisions can have wide-reaching effects.

Issues that could come up in future include interring human remains discovered during local development in the park, he said — emphasizing that no one is talking about turning the park into a graveyard — or allowing camas lily bulbs, a traditional First Nations food, to be harvested in a certain area.

Our Moss Lady needs some love

I’ve been watching Beacon Hill Moss Lady go downhill for years now. Just have to say something.

Its lack of maintenance is showing badly. Most of the moss is gone and there are patches everywhere. This sculpture is a tourist attraction and should be looked after properly.

We are losing our moniker of the City of Gardens. We can do better.

While the BHP "Moss Lady" may be the least of the CoV's problems, it is symbolic of how things have deteriorated in this once beautiful city.
