In UK, Twitter, Facebook rants land some in jail

LONDON - One teenager made offensive comments about a murdered child on Twitter. Another young man wrote on Facebook that British soldiers should "go to hell." A third posted a picture of a burning paper poppy, symbol of remembrance of war dead.

All were arrested, two convicted, and one jailed — and they're not the only ones. In Britain, hundreds of people are prosecuted each year for posts, tweets, texts and emails deemed menacing, indecent, offensive or obscene, and the number is growing as our online lives expand.

What next, look at someone the wrong way and go to jail?

That's insane. I thought it would be something like death threats or stalking or inciting a race riot. Apparently you have to "support the troops" by law in england? Also can't be mean or rude.

I wonder what came of that fellow who openly talked on Facebook about bombing or shelling the new mosque on Quadra?

Can't believe this occurs in Canada in this day and age, disturbing....was it on his own page or a group page?

Yes, I <3 Downtown Victoria posted a photo I believe of the mosque and the poster in question suggested it would be better off if it took a hit from his grenade launcher, or something along those lines.

Twitter is coming under fire over claims the platform censors individuals without their knowledge (restricts their account from being viewed, etc., while the account appears in good standing). This comes with the release of a Project Veritas undercover video related to what Twitter calls "shadow banning."

Their algorithms also, apparently, "ban a way of talking."

Another Project Veritas undercover video released earlier this week also shows a senior network engineer at the company stating that they would have no problems handing over private messages related to Trump's account, and that private conversations can be easily viewed by employees, deleted messages and tweets are in fact retained and can be viewed or released.

Twitter has been known to shadow-ban for many years, so this isn't particularly new information. But James O'Keefe certainly has never been one with a flare for the dramatic

Many social media platforms engage in the practice. Reddit allows for shadow-banning as well. Not to say that it is right or wrong, just saying that it happens and has happened for many years.

Also, why wouldn't Twitter turn over Trump DMs to the DOJ? Is that really a shocking piece of information? You're using a private company's service and are shocked when they say they have control over the information you have given them?

Not only do they shadow ban, but in those videos you can hear folks talking about banning individuals who have specific interests, and by extension right wing political beliefs.

So it’s all rather comical that throughout the election we were told third parties used social media to impact the election when, in reality, the social media platforms were already trying to subvert content to favour a political candidate.

I’m sure we all “knew” that things like this were “possible” but to hear it coming from employees cements a reality we sort of all feared or wished wasn’t the case.

I am not sure either this or the google stuff really matters. If people don't like the services or are opposed to what they think they are doing then use another one. People don't like Volkswagen messing with testing then don't buy a Volkswagen. People are able to use Duck Duck Go or 4Chan if they would rather.

Fair enough but in the case of google they have something bordering on a monopoly. Its not like volkswagen has 90% market share

I guess people like their product compared with other options. There are numerous search engines out there, it also happens to upset fox news. Corporations, especially US ones which are considered legally as people are allowed a political slant. Many do have them.

Twitter can bar people for whatever they want so long as it doesn't contravene any human rights laws.

Maybe so but standard oil was broken up at 90% market share. Why not google? They control 90% of search traffic and arguably more when you consider all their services and devices tied together

That’s the thing. These organizations have become more like utilities than mere companies. People depend on them, and once people universally depend on something it becomes a utility.

If Google/Facebook/Twitter we’re each one of five or six companies equally sharing the market with equal numbers of consumers then switching becomes pretty easy, but by design tech companies aim to singularly control the markets they enter and there’s no government oversight to ensure they don’t become too large without being broken up or partially sold off.

I would fully support Twitter becoming a utility. I think that it could become the first international utility. I would love it if it could be extra-national so that a single country's laws couldn't limit it.

Twitter isn't necessary or ubiquitous. The Internet arguably is, but not Twitter. Or Facebook/Google/whatever tech company.

The benefit of twitter over other mediums is the crows sourced immediacy. It is like VV on an industrial scale. You get to know what is is happening literally as it does and for whatever reason, Facebook has not been able to mirror that. Perhaps it is that there is a true single stream of info that can be dialed into that provides that info, I am not sure. In someways, Twitter is like having all the old telegraphs go to one place.

Frankly twitter kind of sucks and if it weren't for Donald Trump probably wouldn't even be around anymore
