An artist's rendering of 1124 Vancouver Street / 941-953 View Street proposed for downtown Victoria's Harris Green neighbourhood. Honestly, I'm just impressed that there's a developer who is aware of bricks as a building material.

Really? Brick is one of the most common materials on Victoria new builds it seems...

I think it's another case of a Vancouver architectural firm that's stymied as to what this neighbourhood's vibe is all about. Or they're uninterested in creating a vibe.

 

The Jukebox next door gets it. The oval tower proposed beside it gets it. This looks like filler.

Presuming this one would include and build over the adjacent parking lot currently abutting the old depot structure? I get this is an early days rendering but geez this looks like a Stalinist-era administration building in Omsk, circa 1964......

From the 1970s (Spencer Castle, North Park Manor, Harbour Square, Nootka Court, Capitol 6, Harbourside in James Bay, etc.) right through to the 2000s (Shoal Point, Parkside, Bayview 1/2/3, Black and White, Oak Bay Village Walk, 1008 Pandora, etc.) it often seemed as if brick was the only building material that developers in Victoria were aware of. That's what inspired some insightful person on this board (not me) to coin the phrase "brick fatigue".

 

That said, I love stuff like Sussex Place, City Place, Aria, Shoal Point, Swallow's Landing, Promontory, the Janion, etc. I wouldn't mind seeing more brick on new buildings in Harris Green. I'll take brick any day of the week over some of the lamer panel cladding that's currently getting overused.

 

But do an interesting job of it. Don't just slap swaths of plain brick cladding on a box. Give it some vitality. Use different types and colours, maybe even (gasp) painted brick. And give some serious attention to the overall lines, the windows, the window frames, the balconies, etc. etc.

Many recent Victorians may not know just how crazy this intersection used to be. I was like driving over a sleeping elephant. View and Vancouver is now the location of what must be one of the most expensive intersections in the province. I think the work there was around 2 million dollars and that was ten years ago.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The Jukebox is easily one of the ugliest buildings in the city IMO.
