Saw this over on AvCanada...

... not sure if it belongs in the airport thread, or in one of the real estate values threads.

There's a red plane, looks like a Dash 8 to me, that is flying circles above Victoria. Odd.

It’s Nav Canada’s test plane. They use it to make sure navigational exquipment is working as it should. It’s been flying around for several days now. At least I think that’s its purpose.

You got it. It's used to calibrate the nav equipment.

Heard from one of the construction foremen that the lower holdroom expansion starts next week. Construction work will mostly happen at night.

Makes sense that construction is about to start (or may have already). YYJ posted a video on YouTube a few days back that looks to be a test run for time-lapse videos they'll be uploading as construction goes on.

WestJet has added Paris-CDG to its route list for Summer 2018 schedule. Flight is out of Halifax on their new 737 MAX 8. Slowly but surely adding to their European network ahead of the arrival of their 787s in 2019.

They've also added one flight a week to their seasonal Victoria-Toronto run. Up to 4x weekly from 3x weekly. Also increased Vancouver service from 33 to 35 times weekly and Calgary service from 35 to 36 times weekly.

When they get their 787s, will they be flying real long haul flights? IE. YVR - GAT or YYC - LGW?

Another question - when will an airline start flying YYJ - HNL or OGG -  is there not enough demand for that, seems to me there would be, at least seasonally.

WestJet is already flying both of those YVR and YYC routes on its 767s. They haven't publicly stated if they plan on taking those out of service once they get the 787s. I would imagine we will see them enter the Asian market from YVR with their 787s.

As for YYJ to Hawaii, WestJet offered a season flight from 2009-2016. It was cut due to low demand.

Edit: Correction, WestJet has stated that they will retire the 767s once the 787s enter their fleet. They also want to fly to South America with those planes. With 20 orders they can certainly continue their existing European operations and expand elsewhere.

Now if only it didn't take 2 or 3 flights and ~$350 minimum to get to Halifax...

You can fly from YVR to Paris for $566 to $616 return (includes taxes) according to this website.  July/August, 2 stops.  Similar prices from YYJ.

I looked earlier on Expedia and saw nothing.

Just checked WestJet's site and there is a fare for about $650 round trip in July. Almost 20 hours each way though.

PS. If you are planning to travel to Halifax this summer it is cheaper to book to Paris and then just get off the flight in Halifax!

I wish the airport would receive improved public transit to get there. I noted a letter in the paper with that comment the other day. It's pretty inadequate right now.

Airport authority makes too much money leasing space to taxis and the shuttle is my guess!

The Vancouver to Calgary service is getting the biggest boost with the addition of 24 new flights per week, 88 to 112, for a total of 16 flights daily.

Westjet is also increasing service to Edmonton (50 to 59 flights weekly), Kelowna (40 to 49), Ottawa (seven to 14), Regina (six to seven), Fort. St. John (six to 12), Victoria (33 to 35), Cancun (two to three) and Cabo San Lucas (one to two).

Westjet.

This just tells me that YYJ should really treat the Vancouver shuttle differently than direct flight to Toronto.  Right now they are treated identically.  Make the Vancouver leg so easy, make the check-in 15 minutes in advance, not 90.

Also, why isn't there an IMAX movie theatre and casino at YVR?  Great ways to kill time.
