The Victoria Airport Authority (VAA) is excited to
announce the launch of the YYJ Solar System Pathway, a unique outdoor educational
project that invites residents and visitors to explore our solar system in a fun and interactive
way. The YYJ Solar System Pathway, conceptualized by 17-year-old Evan Papps, a Grade 12 International Baccalaureate student at Glenlyon Norfolk School, is designed to inspire a
love for astronomy and environmental stewardship.
The pathway begins at Jubilee Park playground on Mills Road in North Saanich and extends
clockwise for 9 kilometres along the paved and accessible YYJ Flight Path, showcasing the
sun and the eight planets through a series of interpretive signs placed at proportionate
distances. Each metre along the path represents 500,000 kilometres in space, making it an
engaging way to visualize our cosmic neighbourhood.
“We wanted to create an experience that not only educates but also engages the
community,” says Evan Papps. “I’m incredibly grateful for the support from local businesses
and organizations, including the Invasive Species Council of BC, Don Mann Excavating,
Nicholson Manufacturing, Victoria Airport Authority, and the Takaya Legacy Project. I hope
this pathway inspires everyone, especially children, to learn more about astronomy and take
small actions to protect our planet.”
The pathway features ten informative signs that include fascinating facts about the sun and
each planet. Artwork created by local children and tips for maintaining healthy ecosystems
are included, making this a community-focused initiative.
Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands, shared, “This is a
remarkable initiative that blends education, sustainability, and community spirit. The Solar
System Pathway is a perfect example of how local projects can inspire both curiosity and
environmental awareness, while celebrating the rich history of the Coast Salish peoples. I
commend Evan and all those involved for their vision and commitment to our planet.”
Peter Jones, Mayor of North Saanich, added, “The Solar System Pathway is a wonderful
addition to our community and aligns with our commitment to environmental stewardship and
education. We invite everyone to walk, run or roll along the Flight Path and enjoy this
fantastic learning experience.”
