As the City struggles to complete the project, I sure can't see any great interest in the fact that Foster's name is attached to it.

Foster is a relative unknown, internationally.  Outside of music industry insiders.

Here's a list of famous music producers, in descending order from most Grammy nominations to fewest.  I'll bold the ones I'm familiar with.  Apart from ones that are known also as performers, there is not much name recognition here.

Nominations

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis
David Foster
Quincy Jones
Babyface
Rob Cavallo
Nigel Godrich
Danger Mouse
Rick Rubin
Greg Kurstin
Walter Afanasieff
T-Bone Burnett
Dr. Dre
Arif Mardin
Brendan O'Brien
Hugh Padgham
L.A. Reid
Narada Michael Walden
Peter Asher
Glen Ballard
Jeff Bhasker
James Anthony Carmichael
Phil Collins
Neil Dorfsman

Don Gehman
Michael Jackson
Daniel Lanois
Diplo
Dr. Luke

May 2012 CTV news item about the Foster foundation's 25th anniversary, and how David Foster Way got its name (yes, it's thanks to Michael Bublé): https://www.youtube....h?v=1bUrNLeHx8A

May 2013 TC item about Foster donating $50,000 to the harbour pathway: http://www.timescolo...or-him-1.145719

I wonder where those magical giant piano keys are on ships point, and even more so I wonder where the heck is that big arts centre on the Inner Harbour that both Foster and Fortin were talking about?

Funny how big news stories of the day, when looked back on in 2018, appear somewhat lacking in actual results compared to what was touted back in 2012.

To be fair though, there are a small group of local folks who have been associated with Foster for a very long time, and those folks keep his name alive in Victoria (largely through his foundation - which is run from here in town) such that it's understandable that a high profile path might be named after him ... largely for his foundations good deeds.

Right. $50k. Thanks Jacque. Looking back at that video, I don't think Foster is still with that wife. I haven't heard about any advocacy from him to finish the walkway or build a performing arts centre. I have a feeling that with the sale of his Shoal Point condo, and no longer having a mom here, that his interest in his home town is waning.

Don't be so sure.

His first wife still lives here.  But he's nearly 70, so I'm not sure how our city fits into his plans.

Foster has been married four times and has five biological daughters and seven grandchildren

I would honestly prefer the "Walmart Harbour Walkway".

It has a whole new look!

The planned upgrades to the plaza at the intersection of Belleville and Menzies streets seem to be well underway (part of those planned for the Harbour Pathway).

The current work is concentrated at the intersection itself, the 'Belleville Plaza' reconstruction, and the sidewalks/block between Menzies and Oswego (between the Robert Bateman Centre/Starbucks, to Oswego).

This article below is a year old now, but I assume the design and intent hasn’t changed -

“According to a staff report, there are currently a number of issues within the 400 block of Belleville Street, including poor sidewalk conditions, limited right-of-way and the retaining wall, which supports the sidewalk and the road, is near the end of its life.

The area also sees some of the highest pedestrian concentrations in the city, which is only expected to grow with increased tourist activity in the coming years.”

The $3-million project will include the construction of two new retaining walls near the Belleville Terminal, widening sidewalks, adding 12 boulevard trees, a mid-block crosswalk, re-paving the streets between Oswego and Menzies streets, marked on-street bike lanes and redesigning the plaza space at the intersection of Belleville and Menzies.”

“It’s the primary entrance to the Inner Harbour. It’s for every one of the tourists, passengers that get off the Clipper or the Coho and come into the city. It’s the first point of contact with the City of Victoria,” said Dellebuur, the city’s manager of transportation.

“In the coming years, the plaza is expected to improve pedestrian and cyclist connectivity and sightlines from Belleville Street to the Lower Causeway, allow for better programing for arts and culture events, and create a simpler, more open and classic design to complement the Steamship Terminal building and the Lower Causeway.”
