So I hear Me-Wah on Oak Bay Ave. has new owners and the food is fairly awful now. A shame, a lot of people I knew said it was the best in town.

Jack Lee's Chinese Village closed in 1998. I think it was torn down to make way for the Pier One furniture store. Too bad, the restaurant was designed by Bob Siddall.

I wish I could remember what all was on that block. We used to eat there when I worked at Bridgeport Carpets. Before it was Vancity and a casino.

Anyone know of a good place for meaty garlic ribs? Every Chinese restaurant I've tried here so far either breads and deep fries the ribs and they have little meat.

Thanks for suggestions!

Some of our favorite chinese restaurants around Victoria include Jacks near Interurban & Wilkinson, Dragon Gate, Golden Chopsticks.
The following are gone but not forgotten - The Chinese Village, Chans on Oak Bay Avenue, Peking House ( The Best Egg Foo Young ) and the Ho Ho Kitchen off of Broad St.

Is there anywhere in town that serves authentic Chinese cuisine - like actual Cantonese or Sizchuan? I'm not talking greasy gwailo Chinese food like sweet & sour, fried rice or chop suey - more like the lighter Cantonese dishes.

If you are in Langford, the Gold Lion on Jacklin Rd. across from Belmont School seems pretty good. I've been chowing down there for years.

Well I am not sure how authentic they really are but I have enjoyed some more interesting and tasty meals at Golden Palace on Fisgard and The Fountain at Hillside and Blanshard. Wah Lai Yuen is also really good.

G-Man, do you mean Golden City across from The Hudson?
If so, I've been told by numerous Chinese people (not CBC) they thought it was very good HK-style food.

I really liked Crystal Jade Buffet up by Save on Foods, but it's quite different depending when you go. The friday/saturday dinner is near $20 but has lots of great items like duck, crab, etc. Regular lunch buffet is still good but not nearly as much choice.

Ocean garden is pretty good, though maybe too greasy for some.

I haven't been since it first opened but that sounds good. Will have to make a return trip.

Just back from several good meals in Bangkok Chinatown and Jade Fountain's dim sum compares well. Don't know anywhere else in town that I could say the same.

I have tried dim sum in quite a few locations across the continent, including Chinatown in San Francisco and I still rate Don Mee's as my favourite, for variety, taste and ambience.

I have been avoiding Don Mee's due to a run of rather bad meals.

Jacks at Interurban and Wilkinson is surprisingly good.

Locally I have always had good luck with Ocean Garden for takeout/delivery. When I lived in Vancouver the Pink Pearl on East Hastings was always a huge favourite, especially for dim sum.
