As a decision to make it sucks cause neither side is wrong.

I wish I knew what recreational opportunity they are talking about.

I thought it was 'no net loss' of parkland. Same with the Burnside Gorge Community Centre. So this community is now 'owed' two replacement parks if I'm correct.

Sounds about right Martini - good to see you today.

Between Gorge, Burnside, Harriet and Washington the city should purchase several lots and build a park. Ideally linking the end of Maddock with Ceclia so as to create a bike/walk access to the Galloping Goose in the neighbourhood. To do this would take the purchase of four lots. The lots would be large enough to have playground equipment on them and a basketball court. Personally I would love to see a tennis court.

My suspicion is that the park is off-limits because there has been a lot of talk amongst anti-poverty activists about using it as a temporary tent city until the shelter was ready to be built.
Soil sampling. Right.

Well, when we were there on Sunday there were holes all over the place. Just like someone had been doing soil sampling. So it isn't that far fetched.

Probably both theories are plausible in this case.

I think soil sampling is standard given it is an industrial area.
When they were breaking ground for the new Burnside Gorge Community Centre, it was halted due to contaminated soil.

It also does make sense to block access as it could be used to camp in even though it's not technically designated a park anymore.

The original condition that Council was given for provincial funding to build it was that they had to move the process along fast enough that they could have a 2008 construction start. Well, to the horror of the community, council did their part... so let's see if we get our 2008 construction start.

tick tick tick....

Every area that has had any sort of industrial use needs to have soil sampling done before anything can forward.

The site may not have been an industrial site, but is has been surrounded by enough stuff for long enough to make it important to test the soil and see if any remediation is needed on the site.

If one wants to start this year, you need to have been in the ground already testing the site.

I understand it is still on track for a 2010 completion although groundbreaking hasn't started (probably waiting for warmer ribbon-cutting weather [I'm only half-joking]).

they won't put a tower crane up for a 5 storey building. maybe they will put a small self erecting crane on site, but that would be it.

Kind of like asking what the obsession with Star Trek is at a sci-fi con.
