You have to be vaccinated to sail, right?

A minimum of 88 times.

Cruise ship headed to Victoria had 'lots of COVID,' passenger says

“The whole 12th floor is an isolation ward,” said Ally Carol of Richmond, who boarded the ship in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with her partner in late March for a 19-day cruise to Canada.

“There are active cases in cabins throughout the ship as well, and they [aren’t telling] anyone. They say it is a privacy issue and they can’t share with anyone, but medical teams in protective gear are seen going to rooms.”

___________

The company did not mention or respond to inquiries about COVID-19 aboard the ship, but the vessel has been listed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control as having “orange status.”

___________

Of the 104 cruise ships opting into the CDC’s COVID-19 protection and inspection plan, 38 have an orange status, including Holland America Line’s Konigsdam, which arrives to open the cruise season in Victoria this Saturday.

The CDC said 101 of the 104 ships on its list are considered “highly vaccinated,” but not a single ship reaches its “standard of excellence” of 95 per cent of passengers and crew fully vaccinated with two doses and a booster, if eligible.

I think that #1 Darren Kloster and David Obee won't be invited to any swanky Harbour Authority or Tourism Victoria parties any time soon, and #2 doesn't "living with covid" mean we just live with it, whether it's on a ship or in our schools or at summer camps?

^ I don't think it is a coincidence that the Ministry has stopped counting covid cases and has shut down the ability to self-report.

It is true that we have to live with covid but that doesn't mean we need to invite thousands of infected people into our downtown core.

Had we taken a more measured approach initially, we wouldn't be so desperate now for money that we have to go to the other extreme.

Living with covid means we do not consider it a "danger", or those with it a danger to others.  Whether it's one person or a ship full of 3,000.

If we still feel it's more dangerous than flu or colds we'll never get over it.

The issue is not whether we "feel" it is more dangerous than the flu or colds, the simple fact is that it is more dangerous. We may still have to live with it but it is not a matter of how we feel about it.

I suspect most cruise lines are looking for 2x doses, not a booster as well. Likely why, considering most cruise lines are requiring vaccination.

There are already many people infected with COVID in our downtown core everyday; asymptomatic and untested, but they are there.

That's a higher vaccination rate than BC has achieved. Cruise ship passengers likely have more to fear* from us than we have from them.

* although we've all got to stop living in fear

^ ^ ^ I say the same too.  BC Ferries will bring us way more than 3,000 tourists every day.  Should we stop them (again), out of caution?

On the ferry last Friday, rainy morning, everyone inside. Full house. 90% maskless. So, yeah.

And none of them having to prove they were vaccinated before boarding.

A Canadian passenger aboard the Caribbean Princess says there was “lots of COVID-19” on the cruise ship, which has cancelled its scheduled stops in Victoria and Vancouver this week.

Princess Cruises confirmed Monday there were COVID-19 cases aboard the vessel, although it did not disclose the number. It said it left Florida with its 1,600 guests and crew “100% vaccinated.”

______________________________

But the Canadian leg of the journey was abruptly cancelled late Friday. In a statement over the weekend, Princess Cruises said it wanted extra time to prepare for dry dock near Portland, Oregon, so the vessel was ready for the “busy summer season.”

In another statement to the Times Colonist on Monday, however, Princess Cruises acknowledged that COVID19 cases were discovered as the voyage from Florida progressed. “During the cruise … we identified some positive COVID-19 cases amongst our guests and and crew members,” said Princess spokeswoman Negin Kamali.

The company did not disclose the number of cases on the ship, saying they were all asymptomatic or only mildly symptomatic and were quarantined while they were being monitored and cared for by the shipboard medical team.

Princess Cruises said it worked with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and San Francisco Department of Public Health.

Guests who tested positive and did not complete the isolation period either returned home via private transportation or were provided accommodations on shore that had been co-ordinated in advance for isolation and quarantine.

Why is this even newsworthy? Does BC Ferries test all of its passengers before, during and at the end of each sailing? Who knows how many deadly carriers are coming to Vancouver Island.

Newsworthy enough for the TC, that the TC has updated their story 3 times now.

A LOT has changed on cruise ships in the past 2 years.

Just don’t get why somebody would hop on a cruise ship this year. Such better options. Cruise ships are popular with the mobility challenged however.

If we had better vagrancy laws (and cheap labour I suppose) we’d have pockets of our own countries that would be better than cruise ships.
