From the Victoria News:

Tim Van Alstine has entered the race for a seat on Victoria city council.
After chairing the James Bay Neighbourhood Association and serving on many city committees for years, Van Alstine, a 53-year-old Canada Post employee, says he felt "the time is now" to seek office.
He lists addressing homelessness and affordable housing as top priority.
He also wants to see the city's neighbourhood plans updated quickly.
"It's got to the point where our neighbourhood plans are so out-of-date that really there's no function anymore," he said.
Vice-chair of the city's transportation committee, Van Alstine also says it's time for Victoria to move toward becoming a city where residents don't need cars, advancing work on the pedestrian master plan, cycling routes and transit.
Parks are another concern and Van Alstine supports seeing the city designate all currently-used city-owned green space as protected parkland.
"Something that would have some form of public consultation process prior to (any development) initiative going forward rather than after," he said.
The field of declared contenders for Victoria's eight council seats continues to grow in advance of the Sept. 30 official opening of nominations. Van Alstine joins Robert Randall, Pieta Van Dyke, Lynn Hunter, John Luton, Phillipe Lucas, Gregory Hartnell, Patrick Jamieson, Joseph Boutilier, John Farquharson, Susan Woods, Michael Sharpe and Diana Smardon on the list of people seeking new seats.
Incumbents Geoff Young, Pamela Madoff, Sonya Chandler, Charlayne Thornton-Joe and Chris Coleman all plan to seek re-election.
Nomination papers can be filed at City Hall between Sept. 30 and Oct. 10. Election day is Nov. 15.
