Nothing says classy like hot dog eating and root beer drinking contests.

Oly's....never really got into that place and now i know why...hot dog eating contests? Ugh. Participated in a hot dog eating contest at work a few years back and couldn't even look at a hot dog for 5 years afterward. I think I went to Oly's all of once in my "clubbing years", had a beer and left. For a small city back in the day Victoria nevertheless attracted and featured some pretty good live bands.....

OMG, we went to Oly's all the time.  I specifically recall:

  • Going in once as an 18-year-old.  We all got IDed, but I'm like, "hey these guys are all 19, I must be too, right?"  Guy agreed.
  • Two distinct sides, separated by a roll-up door, strippers one side, bands the other.  Different drink prices each side.
  • They used to let you in free before 9pm, but they would give you a stamp if you left after, so we'd get the stamp on Friday night, then go to Hillside Mall stationery store and buy the $4 stamp, stamp all our friends that night.

My 'club years' were probably ages 18-31 VHF; from 20-25 I was at UVic so the bulk of my nocturnal activities were centered on campus and especially the student bar @ Felicitas where I bounced for 4 years. We only occasionally would venture downtown.

When I did venture off campus like most people I tend(ed) to be a creature of habit hanging out at the same clubs - The Thatch in Royal Oak to about age 21, Monty's Nightclub (pre-strip bar era) when we wanted to head off campus in the mid-80's, then later hung out mostly at Sweetwaters whenever I'd visit the rock while I was at UBC from '87-89. By 1991 I had pretty much wrapped up "club" life :).

I moved back to YVR in 1997 and from then until 2001 when I moved back to YYJ yet again I mostly patronized west side pubs in Kitsilano with the occasional foray to the Yale Hotel to catch my blues fix or the Commodore for live entertainment.

Ssshh you! Ok I admit I do recall at least 1-2 trips to N5O waaaay back in the mists of time; also a few sojourns to the Fraser Arms and the old BlueBoy on SE Marine Drive - where "mitzi" missed our table with one of her infamous ping pong balls by less than a foot once upon a time.

I'm probably one of the few people I know who got kicked out of all places the Biltmore Hotel on Kingsway - and yes it was actually as bad as the name implies - after a major brawl and survived to talk about it. Now those were the days lad......!

How do you drink a root bear? Do you need an extra big straw?

Suddenly felt kinda old looking at the "Vertigo" ad; that UVic pub-bar space was known as "Felicitas" when I went there in the 80's and where I bounced to 1986. It didn't become Vertigo until well into the 90's and I know at that it was closed several years ago (I think) to be converted into additional cubicles and office space. Too bad - the UVic students of today have no idea what they're missing, lol.....

January 1991. The first public performance by a new Seattle band called Mookie Blaylock, which would soon change its name to Pearl Jam.

Worthwhile researching and reading up on the PJ - Mookie Blaylock connection and the "how and why" at least for a short while the band opted to adopt the troubled NBA player's name if not his persona....

I'm so old I thought it was still called Felicitas.

I'm sorry, but I still get a little aroused when the stories about the old bar scene start to resurface.

I'll be right back.

The pub is still called Felicitas. When the UVSS expanded the SUB, the expansion included a club space, called Vertigo.
