Here is an email I got from the Friends of Crystal Gardens.

I helped, back a couple of years ago, to try and save the zoo.

Anyways I thought I would post this to see if anyone would be interested in this.

Hello everyone that supported the fight to save the Crystal Garden Conservation Centre. The Organization Advocating Sanctuary for Endangered Species (OASES) is now making an effort to get a new conservation centre built in the greater Victoria region and our first official event is to host a presentation about the effort to protect and restore Africa's painted dogs. Please read the following and I hope to see you there next Saturday, September 30. Please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested.

Thank you,

John Creviston
former Curator of Animals
Crystal Garden Conservation Centre

Subject: Greg Rasmussen

An opportunity to meet and hear Greg Rasmussen, the conservationist who is tirelessly working to save one of the most endangered carnivores in Africa, the African Painted Dog.

Greg is making this special appearance in Victoria before speaking in Vancouver, en route to returning to Oxford England and Africa. His work is connected with
the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit of the University of Oxford, Department of Zoology.

The Painted Dog is the second most endangered carnivore in Africa. Painted Hunting Dogs, also know as Wild Dogs, are facing extinction with probably no more than 3000 left on the continent.

The Painted Dog Conservation Project is a community-based project, developed by Greg Rasmussen, which provides employment, education, and joy to the country of Zimbabwe. It is an “…amazing community based conservation project …” said Renee Bumpus. This successful program could be the turnaround for one of the most critically endangered species in Africa.

“Greg is a fascinating speaker as well as a terrific storyteller”. This lecture will be engaging, educational and enjoyable ... especially for those interested in conservation. (Greg Rasmussen was recently featured in The Discovery Channel series ‘I shouldn’t be alive’.)

As Greg has said about conservation… “Somewhere there is a hat for everyone that wants to help conservation whether it is simply creating awareness or being involved with a support group. I have a lot of involvement with schools and my message for kids is always that you must have dreams and you must not be afraid to follow them. Dreams are like rocket fuel that propel you forward and in my case kept me alive.”
