Most of the revenue shortfall stemmed from lower than expected fare revenues. Bus ridership has bounced back from the COVID-19 pandemic, but not LRT use.
"Both on the bus and LRT side, there is a pocket of riders who are working hybrid arrangements, taking fewer trips," said Edmonton Transit Service manager Carrie Hotton-MacDonald. "That's happening around Canada."
The city budgeted to collect $99.2 million from fares, but actually made $87.4 million — a difference of nearly $12 million.
LRT ridership, meanwhile, is 75 per cent lower than it was in 2019, Hotton-MacDonald said, adding that some people have stopped taking the train due to safety concerns.
"Late night, we see fewer trips being completed on the LRT than we did pre-pandemic," she said.

"Langford Station cultural district" has a bit of an oxymoronic ring to it.

Many can't handle the truth about a changing suburb centre. More affordable neighbourhoods are attracting more professionals to move there, including artists, musucians, etc.

We rode the C train in Calgary for a few hours yesterday, very easy to get around to most major attractions, with a free zone in the downtown core. Cost $11.60 for a day pass, but probably could have ridden for free all day. Completely honour system, didn't see one transit cop or get fare checked anywhere.

Mind you, C Train stations have a sketch rep. I don't think that's true for Skytrain. I'm not sure that C train can effectively introduce a fare gate system when there is a free zone.

What's a sketch rep?
Know it all.

Sketchy reputation, presumably.

Oh geez, lol. I thought maybe it was a transit job where you only bother people who look sketchy, to see if they've paid the fare or not.
I'll let Alex Jones know Calgary transit has sketch reps.

I wonder if that ('sketch rep') is a relatively recent trend; I rode it fairly routinely between 2011-15 when commuting to the city each quarter, and more recently in 2017-18 we rode C-train at all hours day and night over two consecutive year visits to the Stampede, and I have never once experienced, heard or witnessed an "issue". At a rough guess I would presume where there are problems on the system they might very closely approximate the section(s) of town in which those stations were physically located that were themselves higher crime neighborhoods?

We rode from one end to the other on both the red and blue lines, never encountered any problems, the worse thing we experienced was groups of young kids loudly discussing their lives.

Not really. I was there riding it quite a few times, and hardly saw any sketchy people. The trains were pretty crowded and lots were students or working folks trying to get places. I think the best ways to remove the undesirables is simply to improve on enforcement, and impose stiffer penalties on those who don't pay. Simple.

Both of which were noticeably missing during our time riding the train.

Hence, nothing that cannot be solved.

Didn't really need them, never saw any problems.

Binding arbitration is fine.
Final offer arbitration even better.

Except nobody realized Canadian Pacific’s bargaining agreement would now end at the same time CN’s would, because of the extension.
Ordinarily the agreements would never expire in tandem in order to avoid this scenario. Someone wasn’t thinking.
