A judge has intervened and ordered a hearing to review the purchase of the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’s InfoWars site by the satirical news site the Onion.

On Thursday morning, it was announced that the Onion had bought InfoWars at Jones’s bankruptcy auction.

But later that day, the judge overseeing Jones’s bankruptcy case held an emergency hearing, during which lawyers representing Jones and a company affiliated with him expressed concerns about the auction process. The judge has ordered an evidentiary hearing for next week to determine if the auction was conducted fairly, which could delay the process.

“We’re all going to an evidentiary hearing and I’m going to figure out exactly what happened,” the judge, Christopher Lopez, said in an emergency hearing on Thursday afternoon. “No one should feel comfortable with the results of this auction.”

The Australian government won’t proceed with legislation that would have forced social media sites to crack down on misinformation on their platforms after failing to win enough cross-party support.

“Based on public statements and engagements with Senators, it is clear that there is no pathway to legislate this proposal through the Senate,” Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said in a statement Sunday.

The Communications Legislation Amendment Bill, which aimed to combat harmful content on digital platforms, was criticized by the opposition as an attempt to suppress free speech.

The Labor government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is pushing ahead with plans to ban children under the age of 16 from using social media, with firms required to enforce the new regulations or face potential fines.

Rowland urged all parliamentarians to work with the government on other proposals to keep Australians safe online while safeguarding values like freedom of expression.

That’s an attempt to remove all anonymously online and democratic access because how else would you control age access except through digital ID. The safety of children online is an issue but that’s not the solution. Then they can have a way to cut off an individuals access to the internet. Remember when our government froze bank accounts of people who disagreed with their policies….

Dana White, CEO of Ultimate Fighting Championship, joins Meta's board

Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post Monday that Meta had added Dana White, the CEO of Ultimate Fighting Championship, and two other executives to its board.

Meta is adding White, a longtime friend of President-elect Donald Trump, to the social media company's leadership amid a series of moves to strengthen its ties to the incoming administration. Last week, the company shook up the top of its policy team, appointing a longtime executive known for his Republican ties as head of global policy. Meta has also donated $1 million to Trump's inaugural fund.

Interesting moves. I do think there is an inherant bias in social media platforms that is more user driven than anything else for most platforms. I don't find Meta overly biased left or right, but its also hard to discern without seeing a full unfiltered view. Facebook's userbase is aging, I think, which should lend itself to a platform that is slowly tilting more right.

Exceptions though;  Tiktok, which recent research shows has an unexplained pro-CPC bias. Reddit, which tends to be biased towards the subreddit moderator biases (generally quite left leaning, but not always, depends a lot on the sub).

I’m sure this is primarily a cost savings measure. Surely having users do the work that you previously were doing must be the significantly cheaper option.

The fact checkers were biased. Everybody has had enough of the last eight years of top down lecturing, I guess.

Ya, they did it to themselves. Beyond biased. Many times, if you read to the bottom they would confirm that the “Mostly False” was actually true. community notes is at least democratic and I found it fairly useful, and funny on Twitter. Of course an algorithm will control it so it can also easily be biased. But in general, the premise is a lot better.

By proroguing Parliament on Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau snuffed the life out of one of his favourite darlings: Bill C-63, also known as the online harms act.

There’s no excuse for suspending democracy at a time like this, but we should at least celebrate the death of this atrocious bill. Had it (or the two bills the Liberals were to replace it with) passed, the Canadian Human Rights Commission would have been made sheriff of the Canadian internet, empowering it to drag anyone through a lengthy tribunal process making online comments perceived to be hateful. What’s worse, anyone reporting mean comments to this tribunal would be allowed to remain anonymous, which would have allowed the process to be weaponized with ease.

TikTok plans to shut its app for U.S. users from Sunday, when a federal ban on the social media app could come into effect, unless the Supreme Court moves to block it, people familiar with the matter said.
The outcome of the shutdown would be different from that mandated by the law. The law would mandate a ban only on new TikTok downloads on Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab or Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab app stores, while existing users could continue using it for some time.

Apparently millions of US users are fleeing to the Chinese version of TikTok- Xiaohongshu.
Which is hilarious as the whole point of the ban is to ensure that US data doesn’t get into the hands of China.

Oh really?

I guess those millions of users don't know, that the app continues to work, but new users will not be able to download it via US app stores.

I'm going to have to call fake news on this one.
