Some select hotels used to voluntarily submit 1% more to Tourism Victoria.   Now I guess thy all have to.

John should ask for rebuttal time on CFAX. The claims made against him by the TV CEO were pretty damning.

Great chat with Mr. Festival on twitter (@yyjchat #yyjchat).  John Vickers answered both difficult and awkward questions put to him.

Visit twitter acct. @yyjchat for full discussion.

"CEO of Tourism Vic said on radio you moved most (majority) of Buskers Fest. to Uptown mall – True/False?"

WTH? I attended the 2016 festival on multiple days at all the downtown stages, and I'm hard-pressed to see how anyone could claim that most of the action was at Uptown.

^ I didn't hear the TV CEO say "most" but he did state that if the DVBA and hotels were paying for the event they expected it to be downtown. I think that John's point is that they contribute towards the event but they are not the only funders.

You can hear Paul Nursey verbatim - radio interview link - fast forward to about half way "Paul Nursey the president and CEO of Tourism Victoria stops by to talk about tourism in Victoria......." http://fw.to/uJfjYqR

And here is the link to the news article by CFAX on the matter http://www.iheartrad...tival-1.2276929

If Nursey's claim that a "good healthy percentage" of the festival was held at Uptown is an indication of the reliability of all his complaints about Vickers, then I'm still Team Vickers.

A good healthy portion could be 10%. How about we use specific numbers instead of wording that can be interpreted in any which way?

Nursey was out of line indicating the reports supplied was grossly exaggerated and flawed.

This is a personal vendetta.

Its a Victoria festival, Uptown is in Victoria. I would be interested to see if there were any funding restrictions placed limiting all events to a specific 10 block radius from the harbour

If I own a hotel in the downtown core and I give money to the event I expect the events to be held in teh area not on private property (aka Uptown) in an area no where near any of the hotels

When a busker plays Uptown, does that take money for downtown hotels?  I'm not sure.

Ok here is another way of looking at it.

If NIKE pays sponsorship for a runner to run in the Vancouver Marathon they pay that runner a few thousand dollars and outfit him with attire and endorse him then the runner decides that he doesn't really want to run in that marathon and instead runs in the Seattle Marathon and keep the money and doesn't wear the clothes do you Think NIKE should be pissed or is it OK

If the runner doesn't wear clothes in the marathon, Nike should be okay as long as he's wearing their shoes.

Hotel tax for Victoria Hotels as of Jan 1, 2017 that choose to pay into DMF is 17.16%.  At least one hotel I know of collects an additional tax but below is the minimum.

17.16% (1% Destination Marketing Fee (DMF), 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST), and 11% Room Tax)

Example
Room Rate     $100.00
DMF (1%)           $1.00
Subtotal          $101.00
PST (8%)            $8.08
MRDT (3%)         $3.03
GST (5%)            $5.05
Total                 $117.16
