I moseyed down there after they forgave overdue penalties to see if there was anything to borrow, looked at the books/DVDs/video games couldn’t find anything. lots of the older books I had checked out in the past are now gone it appears
Mostly use the library for the newspaper archives and one of the streaming services to watch 3rd Rock from the Sun
I know people working at the library and the stuff that place gets rid of is criminal, considering it's taxpayer funded. Tons of books I like to reread and DVDs I like to watch (no we don't have a streaming service), classic children's books, classics for adults, and most of the magazine collection is gone. And no, I don't like reading magazines online. I want something I can take into the garden and look at nice pictures (gardening and home magazine for example).

The area remained cordoned off during the weekend and “we kept the 24-hour book return closed,” said Ridgway.
When the library reopened Tuesday, however, staff found the problem had not been resolved…”: https://www.timescol...rn-area-9168656

A temporary library branch will open at 3561 Shelbourne St. while redevelopment work is underway at the Nellie McClung site.
https://www.timescol...ebruary-9435987
The library branch will close Dec. 14 for about three years during the redevelopment process.
A temporary library branch will open on Shelbourne Street while that work is underway. The District of Saanich announced Monday it had secured space at 3561 Shelbourne St., at Donnelly Avenue.
________
More details on the new development at 3950 Cedar Hill Rd. are expected to come on Sept. 9, when a development variance permit application is presented to Saanich council.
I have no objection to the project. But look how easy this proponent has it, say compared to a private project developer, that would not be able to move forward until the political decisions have been made. Here they know council will rubber stamp this. Even though council has not even seen the proposed variances yet.

Dozens gathered at the Nellie McClung library branch to mark the closing of the building which has served as a community hub for 48 years.
“The ... branch has been a cornerstone of connection, learning and inspiration, welcoming generations through its doors and providing access to knowledge, resources and a place to belong,” said Maureen Sawa, the CEO of the Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL), on Dec.
6. “Today, we close this chapter in the branch's history, but we also begin an exciting new one.”
The next chapter will start on Dec. 14 when the library on McKenzie Avenue closes its doors for the next three years. Next summer, work begins to replace the two-storey building with an 18-storey tower, which will house a new library and over 200 rent-geared-to-income and below-market apartments. The multi-year project is slated for completion in 2028.

The Oak Bay Public Library was a hotspot for bookworms last year, according to Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) data.
“It remains one of the busiest branches in our system,” said GVPL's CEO Maureen Sawa.
In 2024, the Monterey Avenue library placed second in checkouts and the circulation of physical materials among GVPL’s 12 branches, behind Saanich’s Nellie McClung Library. The Central Branch ranked third.
While library visits rose by 10.8 per cent across the GVPL system last year, the Oak Bay branch logged a 61.8 per cent increase, snagging second place for in-person visits, thanks to the 1,843,553 people who perused its well-appointed stacks.

A temporary replacement for the Nellie McClung library, which is set to be demolished so the Cedar Hill Road property can be redeveloped, has opened on Shelbourne Street.
There’s still the smell of fresh carpet in the new Greater Victoria Public Library’s Nellie McClung express branch, which opened on Wednesday in refurbished office space previously used by an insurance brokerage.
The branch, which has capacity for up to 50 people at a time, has a small kids section and two seats for patrons, along with a sizeable library holds section near the door.
Library staff were handing out erasers to kids who dropped by the branch at 3561 Shelbourne St. on Thursday morning to read.

103 pallets of books on Day 1 of Times Colonist book drive
By the end of the first day of donation collection, there were enough books to fill 103 pallets. Last year, 160 pallets were filled over the two days of collection.
The book drop-off continues from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the curling club parking lot at 1952 Quadra Street.

One book stands out from the 500,000 or so carefully sorted for this weekend’s annual Times Colonist book sale.
It’s an 1880 memoir by Andrew Williamson titled Sport and Photography in the Rocky Mountains — and it has an estimated value of up to US$4,000.
It includes photographs taken using steel plates that have “exceptional clarity,” said Jane Mertz, who has been volunteering at the sale for the past 21 years.
She said a volunteer discovered the book last week and put it in an area for vintage volumes, where it was noticed by another volunteer who thought it was of interest since it was oversized and had quality pictures.
An expert contacted in Washington state came up with the US$4,000 estimate.
Now the plan is to offer the book up for bids online to get maximum value, Mertz said.
All proceeds from the book sale go to literacy projects and school libraries — the sales have raised more than $7 million since the first one in 1998.
