Police believe that speed was a contributing factor to the death of a 55-year-old Saanich resident in a motorcycle crash near Durrance Lake on Thursday evening.

Emergency responders attended Willis Point Road just after 5 p.m., finding a motorcyclist with “significant injuries,” said Saanich police spokesperson Jason Hallman.

The rider was taken to hospital but died due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Hallman said collision analysts from Saanich’s Traffic Safety Unit are investigating, but “early indications are that speed was a contributing factor in the crash.”

ICBC released crash data from 2023 this month, and the stats show crashes at the intersection of Douglas Street, Mackenzie Avenue and the Pat Bay Highway increased by nearly 50 per cent of the previous year, driving it to this inauspicious title.

(86 crashes)

Merge lane would be nice, but no room before glanford. Love cutting across three lanes of highway traffic from a stand still. :)

I’ve done it very often and haven’t crashed either, but coming from the pat bay, turning right on to McKenzie to head to Tillicum can be a full throttle experience.

Not the best intersection out there, apparently it’s the worst.

McKenzie only gets that third lane from just east of Douglas to a little past Pat Bay.

Maybe it is not needed under the overpass, and can instead be dedicated to the traffic you describe.

No charges in death of Oak Bay municipal worker

The 66-year-old woman who struck and killed Steve Seekins last year won’t face charges, Oak Bay police say

Oak Bay public works employee Steve Seekins was killed when he was struck by a speeding SUV that left the road while he was working just off Monterey Avenue.

The driver who struck and killed an Oak Bay municipal employee while he was working just off Monterey Avenue last May will not face charges, Oak Bay police say.

Steve Seekins was hit on May 17, 2023, around 8 a.m. while inspecting a manhole cover in Bowker Creek Park. The driver of a black SUV heading north on Monterey Avenue left the roadway and crashed into him, and then a tree.

The 52-year-old father of two young children died at the scene.

The Oak Bay and Saanich police departments investigated, and in January forwarded a report to the B.C. Prosecution Service, police said in a statement Thursday.

After reviewing the report, including medical evidence indicating the woman had suffered a medical episode at the time of the crash, the prosecution service determined that the standard for approving charges had not been met, police said.

The driver, a 66-year-old Victoria woman, has not been publicly named.

A two-vehicle crash resulted in one vehicle flipped onto its roof in the courtyard of a senior care home in Saanich.

Saanich Police says around 1:30 officers were called to the 1500 block of Cedar Hill Cross Road for a two-vehicle crash.

A pickup truck had rolled over onto private property, and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.

I'm wondering which hospital would treat this sort of situation.

I am not sure which hospital, but it will probably involve the Labour and Delivery or the Rehabilitation sections.

A Victoria mother and her two young sons are recovering from injuries after a head-on collision on the Malahat on Saturday, but friends say the trauma from the event will be long-lasting.

Jessica Payton was travelling to the Cowichan Valley with her sons, ages 3 1/2 and 2, to visit friends when the crash happened at about 5:40 p.m.

RCMP said a southbound SUV crossed the centre line and hit Payton’s small car head-on.

Police said the driver and passenger of the SUV had minor injuries and neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the collision, which closed the Malahat for several hours.

Payton, a hairdresser and single mom who had been taking businesses classes at Camosun College, was still in Victoria General Hospital suffering from serious head trauma on Tuesday.

Her younger son, who was riding in a car seat, was treated for a broken collarbone and seatbelt contusions and released Monday into the care of close friends and family.

Payton’s other son, who was also riding in the back seat, remains in B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver with “serious head injuries,” according to family friend Alison Banton, who has started an online fundraising campaign for the family.

Less than 24 hours after it was launched, the GoFundMe campaign had raised more than $14,000. Banton said the goal is to at least relieve Payton’s financial burdens, adding organizers of the fundraiser would appreciate any donation. “It all adds up. Some of the expenses she will be facing will be a new car, car seats, rent, food.”

Banton said she hopes enough is raised to also provide counselling for the family. “Everyone is so traumatized and that’s something that will probably last a while.”

So what caused the other driver to cross the centre line?

Know it all.

So what caused the other driver to cross the centre line?

Perhaps too much sunlight.  They should have built the skywalk taller to shade the malahat.

It hasn't been announced.  A male and female were in the other car.

These head injuries are tough.  Glad to see she has a bit of a financial cushion for the interim here.  At $26,000+ now.

Wouldn't her insurance pay for a new car?
