Initial police report is just based on one witness.

They state witnesses, so that implies there were more people who saw the crash, other than the driver who was struck. We don’t know for sure if they themselves recall the details.

I'm not sure what you are taking issue with. These are the only two sentences describing the collision. The first one talks about the "strike" and the second modifies to say that Ranns was probably the cause.

Daniel Ranns died after his small westbound pickup was struck by an eastbound one-tonne truck on Hwy 18 on Sunday afternoon.

____________________

Per police, who did not name Daniel Ranns in their release, a witnesses indicated his vehicle may have drifted into the other lane.

Both are false statements, in the GoFundMe.

Police said there were witnesses, not one witness.

Police also said the compact truck struck the one-tonne.
The quote describes the exact opposite at first, then it says it “may” have struck the other vehicle by drifting into its lane. Police don’t say it may have, they said it did.

There is revisionism taking place here. Is the source the GFM?

Police: “According to witnesses, a westbound compact pickup truck drifted into the oncoming lane where it impacted an eastbound one-tonne pickup.”

Sourced quote: “Daniel Ranns died after his small westbound pickup was struck by an eastbound one-tonne truck on Hwy 18 on Sunday afternoon. …Per police, who did not name Daniel Ranns in their release, a witnesses indicated his vehicle may have drifted into the other lane.”

Those statements are completely at odds. They are implying a big truck killed the young man, that he was a victim. I do not think it is appropriate to create that impression.

In a head-on collission, I don't think you can say one vehicle struck the other, or the opposite.  The only question is, where did the collision occur (which lane)?

Did you actually read the GoFundMe?  I did:

We are heartbroken to share that Daniel Ranns, a vibrant 18-year-old who touched the lives of everyone he met, tragically lost his life in a car accident on Sunday, November 3rd. Daniel was full of life, laughter, and love. He was a talented lacrosse player, passionate about the outdoors, and deeply connected to his friends, family, and community.

To help ease the burden on his family—Adam, Dawn, Rosie, Benjamin, and Jenna—we are coming together to raise funds in Daniel’s honor. These donations will go directly to supporting them as they navigate this unimaginable loss and allow them the time to grieve without the immediate financial strain.

Daniel's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him. We are asking for your support in honoring his life and uplifting the Ranns family during this painful time. Any contribution, no matter how small, would mean the world to them.

Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support.

In loving memory of Daniel Ranns.

No, that’s not true. If witnesses say one vehicle crossed the line, the fault lies with that vehicle.

I did not speak to fault.  I am speaking to the terminology of the crash.  One car striking another, or vice versa.

If your car is stopped and my car crashes into you, I'd say I struck you.   Does not speak to fault.

Is this not the GoFundMe?

You posted this, attributing it to GoFundMe.

The Westshore:

Hwy 18 crash kills Metchosin teen—a lacrosse player and the former mayor's grandson

Daniel Ranns via GoFundMe

Daniel Ranns died after his small westbound pickup was struck by an eastbound one-tonne truck on Hwy 18 on Sunday afternoon. Ranns, 18, the grandson of former longtime Metchosin mayor John Ranns, recently graduated from Royal Bay Secondary in Colwood.

Ranns, an eight-term mayor, said that the family is devastated and the the teen was on a trip to look into buying a trailer that he could live in on the family farm. He told the Times Colonist that the 6’5” Daniel was often carrying younger family members on his shoulders, and that the family appreciates the love and support coming in but asks for privacy.

The young lacrosse player, whose parents both coach lacrosse, was remembered by his Westshore Bears coach as a hard worker with a “heart of gold.” JDF Lacrosse remembered him as a player and assistant coach who had a “warm heart and unwavering kindness" that touched everyone around him.

Family friends began a fundraiser, which has nearly reached its $45k goal.

Per police, who did not name Daniel Ranns in their release, a witnesses indicated his vehicle may have drifted into the other lane. Crews tried to free the teen from the wreckage, but he was later pronounced dead. The roadway was shut for some time and the driver of the other truck was hospitalized with what RCMP say appeared to be minor injuries.

Nope, you twisted it all completely around.  AND you were too lazy to even read the GFM.

All I did was clip and paste from WS verbatim.

A bit of a dog’s breakfast then.

So they (the newsletter) editorialized it, and misrepresented the facts. That makes more sense. It looked to me, like you copied and pasted the GFM page.

I thought you were posting the text of the GFM.

It’s not good to see this degree of editorializing. What else are they editorializing?

The police are very good at establishing the point of impact in most crashes, lets leave it to them.

YouTuber is surprised when BC Highway Patrol impounds his high-performance vehicle

BC Highway Patrol

2025-02-05

File # 7001 2025-291

A highly-modified Nissan GT-R is spending the week in an impound lot on Vancouver Island after its driver was ticketed for Excessive Speeding by BC Highway Patrol.

On February 2, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., an unmarked BC Highway Patrol officer was working in Lantzville, BC, when he heard an excessively loud vehicle accelerate away from a stoplight on Highway #19, near Ware Road.

Thanks to the loud exhaust, the police officer was ready with his laser reader and captured the Nissan GT-R doing a speed of 150 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.

The Nissan GT-R driver, who identified himself as a YouTube influencer, never saw the unmarked police car, and he was surprised that his radar detector stayed silent, said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. The driver did not realize that in the hands of a skilled police officer, a laser reader will not be picked up by a detector until it’s too late.

The driver was issued an excessive speed ticket for $368 under section 148(1) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act. The excessive ticket comes with an automatic seven-day impound.

The GT-R driver and his passenger were polite throughout the traffic stop, and they accepted an offer from the BC Highway Patrol officer to drop them off at a nearby Tim Hortons to await a ride from his mother.

On offender's YouTube channel, captioned “showing off gone wrong”, the responding officer can be heard describing the traffic stop to the offender.

“I heard you first coming off the light, just wide open,” the officer said. “I didn’t turn my radar on…I just waited for you to blow right by me, I grabbed your speed at 150 and watched it continue, you probably hit 170 or more but I don’t have that reading, then chased you down.”

Once shown the proof, the 29-year-old said “ok, I won’t argue with that.”

“The cop has been very, very respectful, caring and this tow truck driver has been very helpful and making sure I’ve got everything I need...I will say it is a bit of a bummer, but at the same time I’ve got a couple of other vehicles at home so we’ll be fine for the week.”

He said he plans to move to Kelowna in the next week.

In the final shot, the man and his date can be seen smiling and laughing in the back of the cruiser.

Imagine being 29, and having to call your mother to rescue you from Tim Hortons after getting your car impounded for driving like an idiot.

People attracted to these vehicles have a few screws loose. There’s no other way to explain their choices.
