That’s good to know Tony. I know less than nothing about their social services. Hopefully they have some oversight and governance like any other ethical social service org would.

But most society measures off-reserve, the nation scores very poorly.

It’s only a few generations since our government burned their traditional villages and corralled them into little reserves cutting them off from their seasonal areas and way of life. Plus banning language, the potlatch (their political assembly) etc. After an ethos of free rein here that’s still a fresh wound. Give ‘em time. Personally I’m grateful they are a forgiving bunch. For the most part anyway.

That’s a nice sentiment, but I’ve been inside too many res houses to think social justice niceties are in any way related to the welfare of children covered in fleas, 8 year olds wearing diapers, drunk uncles smashing things, entire households of working age people who are all home drunk on a Wednesday afternoon while the school aged kids are lying in a bed litter led with empties watching tv and inhaling second hand smoke.

You wouldn’t believe the housing conditions / home life of some FN in Victoria unless you saw it with your own eyes (and smelled it too).

That said, there are some really nice families living in pretty nice houses on our local reserves too.

The two are related. I’m not speaking about social justice. I’m just speaking about the cause. Social justice would be me asking you to blame yourself. I’m just talking about the context. It’s important when passing judgement on their present way of life don’t you think?

I don’t think it’ll be possible to figure out. My thought is that taxpayer money, likely indirectly contributed to their bank account through other government programs, is what funded the land purchase. You’d need access to tsawout books to know for sure.
But I’ll buy you a burger and beer anyway. Would be good to meet you man!

Well, we should not have an employment system - public or private - that favours or punishes any race, religion, etc.

^Ironically VW, it is now considered racist to think that way. Isn’t “progress” great?

A dilapidated piece of land in downtown Nanaimo that is part of a historic Snuneymuxw First Nation village is being returned to the nation under the terms of an 1854 treaty.

The province and the Snuneymuxw have bought about 2.67 hectares at 1 Terminal Ave. and adjoining properties for $28.5 million — close to $26 million of which is from the government — for a portion of the Sxwayxum village site, also known as Millstone River Village.

The land next to Swy-A-Lana Lagoon and Maffeo Sutton Park, which had been the subject of a development proposal, was purchased so it could be returned to the Snuneymuxw.

Everyone makes out well here. The developer gets cash. The band gets land for next to nothing.

The only loser is the BC taxpayers that paid everyone out.

This is the Travel Lodge site. The building might be dilapidated, but the land certainly isn't.

Aha! So that’s what’s happening there. We were driving by the other day and the scene is grim. The entire facility is boarded up, and it’s a huge piece of land with a very large motel complex on it. That’s the one we’re talking about, right?

I’m sure it still rents for $275/night in that state.

Know it all.

Taxpayers also gave them $1M to secure the site and tear down the old hotel.
