The inevitable outcome of letting yet another encampment become entrenched. The woke just never learn.  :whyme:

Man who threatened UVic staff, allegedly, with a knife matches the description of someone who had set up a tent, uvic said in a statement. The full release is in the crime thread.

Know it all.

What a massive pile of losers.  There is so, so much more they could do that would actually help people suffering.

Except they have completely dropped the line - that they had at the start - that the camping is unlawful.

It's against policy, i'm not sure its unlawful. But it does say:

"Let me be very clear that while we have not sanctioned students, staff or faculty based on their participation in the encampment, those who damage property, threaten individuals, harass, hinder or prevent people from going about their business, or violate other applicable university policies, will be sanctioned under the relevant policies of the university. People committing illegal acts can be arrested and banned from campus."

They want it both ways but don't want police to help except when they want police to help.......

The Uvic admin meetings would be hilarious to listen to.  Total panic and caught in their own traps.

Well I guess yes I mean itā€™s against policy. And against bylaws for Oak Bay or Saanich.

Trespassing overnight can be a serious crime. But Uvic has been extremely gracious by not declaring them so. so they aren't trespassing since they are being welcomed. They say as much in that statement. More vandalism, intimidation etc might change that stance. Then they are in serious trouble.

Yes. As much as I donā€™t like the encampment, and it does affect me, Iā€™m not in favour of a potentially violent approach to kick them out either so long as they arenā€™t causing significant disruption. I think they are teetering on the edge though. They also dyed / dumped orange or red paint in the pond.

It seems like they want to keep escalating until they get a police response, then they will scream bloody murder.

This is the approach that was taken with the tent city at the courthouse and it took a court order to end that. Encampments should never be allowed to flourish.

Nearly three weeks after a pro-Palestine protest encampment appeared at the University of Victoria, the school says it briefly set up a security camera overlooking the camp, but decided to never activate it.

The message comes after protesters and some school staff raised concerns about the presence of a security camera, which was spotted at the top of the McPherson Library on May 8 before being taken down the same day.

A social media account run by protest organizers snapped photos of the camera being set up and placed, but in the days that followed UVic president Kevin Hall claimed protesters were ā€œspreading misinformationā€ and that the school had never used a surveillance camera.

It was a message that many protesters did not believe.
