"The federal government’s share of soaring health care costs has fallen from 50-50 to as low as 22 per cent, and Canada’s premiers have united to call for that to be increased to 35 per cent."
Provinces need $28 billion more a year for health care, premiers say

I'm afraid the myth of the superiority of the Canadian health care system is long proven to be just that ... a myth.
In short, the myth has entered the realm of outright bullshit.
Sure, if you've got a broken bone, or are suffering from cancer or some other form of life threatening disease, you will be treated quite professionally, and at no cost.
But if you've got chronic conditions, identified or unidentified, the endless loop of trying to inform assorted clinics what you've had "done" to you previously will invariably cause your care to suffer greatly.
The difference between care from a family doctor, and care without a family doctor is almost immeasurable.
That so many Canadians, and especially so many British Columbians still don't have a family doctor borders on criminal, and certainly makes the current NDP government impossible to support in the future.
The NDP is all talk, and zero action on the issue of the shortage of family doctors in B.C.
The NDP are the problem.

Apparently, the front-runner for BC Liberal Party leader is Kevin Falcon and he has some stuff to say about health:
- As Minister of Health, I made sure that BC’s health care system was properly funded and new facilities were built throughout the province to meet the needs of future generations.
- While on the Board of the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, I was reminded daily of the hard work and sacrifices our essential health care workers made while caring for British Columbians.
- we need a leader who brings real world business experience into running our province and has a track record of growing our economy, investing in our infrastructure, and bettering our health and education systems.

Want to solve the GP problem? Pay them 20% more than they can make in the US. There are other things we can cut out like politicians pensions for a start.
Migration to the US is more of an issue with specialists and not so much with GPs.
There are many more issues then pay at stake though. A Canadian specialist who trains in Canada but who is working in the US has the immediate disincentive of having to either re-write exams or go through a review process before they can come back and practice. When they come back they have to deal with a system that is going to limit their ability to properly treat patients by limiting testing and OR time.

He can say whatever he wants but the bottom line is that healthcare will never be a priority as long as politicians. their buddies and the wealthy can get all of the expedited treatment they want.
What is needed is a hybrid system like they have in the UK and many socialist countries that allows for people to have choice.

That's right. Non-urgent care should have a parallel private system where you pay out-of-pocket if you so choose.

I would like to suggest that “WE” are the problem. The NDP ran two election campaigns on $10 daycare.
We bought that story the first time, we should have known better the second time.

Where is my annual rent rebate cheque from the NDP? They will owe me four soon, at $400 each.

They never said the $10 a day daycare was for us. I am sure if you swim in the right pool you can get a spot for you kid.

*All* care is urgent - for the affected (afflicted) person!
I'm pretty sure that if I were to twist a knee skiing, I'd be running off to the Cambie Clinic to get it fixed 'toot sweet', so I could get on with my life rather than waiting for my case to wend its way through the public system...

Yes, I found the Mayo really good and very professional. A close friend of mine is a department head there.

I have never heard of this. Can you elaborate on what they do and how they are paid (ie user pay etc?)
Thanks.

They provide private pay surgical and executive health services. Dr. Brian Day is involved in an ongoing lawsuit which I believe is now in front of the Supreme Court of Canada. Government been trying to shut them down and prevent them from offering private healthcare.
