Victoria, BC – The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, are happy to support the Five Hole for Food campaign that will raise money for community food banks across Canada with a road hockey game in Victoria this Thursday, July 8th.

Five Hole for Food is a grassroots campaign that brings a road hockey game to nine cities across Canada with volunteers collecting donations for their respective community food banks. The program started last week in Montreal and winds up with a July 9th game in Vancouver.

The Victoria stop takes place this Thursday, July 8th at Topaz Park at 5:30 p.m. Marty the Marmot will be in attendance and all community members are encouraged to come out and support the cause!

Participation is free, while all players and spectators are asked to bring food donations. The Salmon Kings will also be auctioning off some merchandise with all proceeds donated to the Five Hole for Food campaign. All monies raised on the Victoria stop will be donated to the Mustard Seed Food Bank.

Richard Loat, a university student from North Vancouver and blogger for the Canucks, created the event to combine the country’s passion for hockey with the need to help the community.

“I was inspired by how Canadians were united by the 2010 Winter Olympics,” Loat said, “and saw an opportunity to use hockey for a good cause. As of July 5th, we have already visited six cities and raised 1900 pounds of food. The support has been tremendous and we can’t wait to get to Victoria.”

Other hockey teams such as the Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadians Vancouver Giants, Ottawa 67’s and Abbotsford Heat are also supporting the cross-country initiative with player participation and auction items.

The complete Five Hole for Food trip will see games played in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria and Vancouver. For more information, please visit www.fiveholeforfood.com.
