Does the flagging that's now around the building mean that demolition is planned?

CTV says the City put it up because parts of it fell off in a wind storm. Not sure how long the City will put up with it, if the owner does not make corrections soon.

Right, with that much rot the whole roof could blow off onto Richmond in the next big windstorm.

A new building could be three or four storeys. How about penthouses on top and lower cost small apartments for students and low-income hospital staff. I would nominate architect Franc D'Ambrosio as he is the master of the low-rise, high quality mixed use building.

The old house next door is on a huge chunk of property that if combined with the Turner lot, have plenty to offer.

Anyone catch Shellie Gudgeon on CBC this morning talking about this? Further proof that she has zero business being a city councillor, she couldn't answer a simple process question. I ain't no fancy city councillor, but even I know that if your building becomes a safety issue or if you ignore bylaw infraction warnings, the City will vote to move in and remediate, fronting the bill and then passing it on to the property owner.

I can't believe that she not only whiffed on a typical Gregor Craigie softball lob, but she tripped over her own bat. If this is what the "business community" has to offer, we might as well forego elections and install Boss Dean-o and his gang of cronies as Mayor & Council for life.

My spouse's grandmother tried to buy the Turner's building for years. This icon could have been saved, but the owners chose to let it rot instead.

This council member communicates with the North Jubilee Community Association and this building has been a topic of concern for YEARS.

ironically she didn't maintain it, & it needs to be torn down now I guess because she wanted it to be preserved.

the cbc interviews can generally be heard via "podcast" on their site the next day. Bob Fugger please don't wish that on us sir. However the interview went, and I did hear it, there has to be hope in the future. During her interview with me on 29er Radio she came across as fairly intelligent and has had her hands in a number of successful Victoria eateries, which isn't an easy task.

It looks like Council is going to allow the Turner family some extra time to come up with a plan before demolition occurs. I think this is nonsense. I love the building but the family had years to save the building and I find it suspicious they suddenly want to save the building just before a hefty demolition bill comes to them.

It would a developer with deep pockets and a vision for saving heritage even when it is not cost effective. I think it is well beyond the family and community to get the money together to save the building.

It doesn't look like there's much left to save...disgusting that the family could have the gall to wait all these years, refuse offers to sell the building, take zero care of the building and then now request an extension.

Even if someone with a big heart and deep pockets wanted to lose money on "preserving" this building, the only possible way to "save" it at this point would be a complete tear down and rebuild. I doubt there's a kilo of salvageable materials left in the structure. For sure it's a sentimental, if not architectural loss, but it's about 10 years too late for any sort of preservation to take place now.

I don't think this building can be saved. I have been reporting to the city for quite some time that the building was infested with rats as big as cats.

I think those buggers have chewed through everything.

I was watching the council meeting webcast last night. Councillor Alto made the motion to extend the deadlines from 7 and 14 days to 14 and 28 days in hopes that there'd be a chance something will be done with it.

It's not like Staff pulled that date out of their ass--obviously they feel this is an emergency; the building is literally falling apart. True, the building is roped off and there is no direct danger but that doesn't stop squatters and pedestrians and cyclists are forced into the roadway. I think this extension is very generous and hope the Turners use it in a productive and sincere way.

Even the taggers know the building is dangerous, I've been by there in the morning a few times and someone's put up something along the lines of "TEAR THIS THING DOWN ALREADY". They cover those ones up pretty quickly.

It's sad because it clearly used to be a pretty cool building with some history in the neighborhood, and it'd be great to see something like it put up in its place, but I don't want the wind blowing the roof off and flattening me on my way to work.
